Sehr gutes Exemplar; Umschlag stw. minimal berieben. - Englisch. - Euripides, Ovid, Seneca, Shakespeare, Lessing, Shelley, Dumas, Wagner, Woolf, Pasolini, Mercouri, Stein, Scrban, Tony Harrison, Ted Hughesthese are just some of the literary and theatrical giants involved in the colourful story told by this volume. Their presence shows how vital andgenerative a role has been played in the history of Western culture by Aeschylus' Agamemnon, one of the most influential theatrical texts in the global canon for over two thousand years. In performance, translation, adaptation, sung and danced interpretation, it was familiar across the Greek world and the Roman empire; in Latin translation and in Seneca's adaptation it exerted a seminal influence on Renaissance poetry and theatre. Since the late seventeenth century, Agamemnon, his powerful wife Clytemnestra, her lover Aegisthus, and the clairvoyant Cassandra have never been far from the stages of Europe; since the late nineteenth century the Aeschylean text, along with its partner plays Libation-Bearers and Eumenides, has been central to the aesthetic and intellectual avant-garde as well as to radical politics of all complexions and to feminist thinking. This interdisciplinary collection of eighteen essays on the performance history of Aeschylus' Agamemnon stretches from its premiere in the Theatre of Dionysus at Athens in 458 bc to the third millennium ad. The authors include classical scholars, theatre historians, and experts in English and Comparative Literature. Several of them have been actively involved in the key contemporary productions directed by Sir Peter Hall, Ariane Mnouchkine, and Katie Mitchell. All Greek and Latin has been translated; the book is generously illustrated, and supplemented with the useful research aid of a chronological appendix of performances.
