Añadir al carritoUnbound. Condición: Good. Weege, Wm. Ilustrador. First Edition. Single sided printed poster, approximately 480mm x 635mm in size. Lightly creased generally, crease to bottom third with small tear to right hand margin, very light foxing mainly to borders, small scuff to top right hand corner, but generally quite bright and clean. "The top half of the poster has a photographic image or movie still showing a large room full of costumed figures lying on the floor. The background of the bottom half of the poster is a pink and black topographical map. In the centre of the poster there is a large photographic image of a woman in lingerie she has the letters: "H A T E" tattooed on the fingers of her left hand. There is a white field that divides the poster across the centre horizontally and obscures the female figures pubic area. The field has a photo of a button with the text: "Kill For Peace / Kill For Freedom / Kill Vietnamese / Kill, Kill", the rest of the field has the text: "In every government on earth there is some trace / of human weakness, some germ of corruption / and degeneracy. Thomas Jefferson". The female figures right leg is partially obscured by a round photographic image of a male figure dressed as an Egyptian Pharaoh and female figures in the foreground reaching up to him" (Oakland Museum of California). William Weege was born in the US in 1935, he studied printmaking, collage and sculpture at the University of Wisconsin and is now Professor Emeritus at the UW-Madison Art Department Size: Atlas Folio. Añadir al carritoOriginal anti-war poster collage poster by Weege, 19 x 25 inches. Half-tone printed in pink and black and with a Jefferson quote in the middle. Some light toning around the edges but a very good copy. "In the fall of 1967, Bill Weege was an art student at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, studying printmaking and sculpture. While studying at Madison, Weege became politically active in the anti-war movement. In October of 1967, Weege participated in the infamous Dow demonstration, protesting the Dow Chemical Co.'s recruitment on the UW campus. Dow Chemical was the manufacturer of napalm, a vicious jellied gasoline used in flame throwers and bombs by U.S. forces in Vietnam" (R. Epp, Gallery One One One) The demonstration was enourmous and soon turned violent with many students being injured by overly-eager police and carted of to the hospital. In fact, it was the first violent anti-war demonstration in America. Weege produced Peace is Patriotic as his M.F.A. thesis in 1967, following the Dow riot. The portfolio of 25 collage prints was both a defiant fierce protest against U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, and a declaration of the right to dissent. Using images and text from popular culture, Weege's prints, sure to raise the nackles of any lurking hawks, condemn American military aggression in no uncertain terms. They attack government war propaganda, and expose the brutality and cruel obscenities of modern warfare. "Peace is Patriotic became popular with the sixties hippie counterculture, as Weege reproduced the prints as posters for campus political rallies and student demonstrations. At times he printed up to 500 posters in a week for different events' (ibid.). THis particular poster seems to be one of the rarest of the 25 and his Napalm poster seems to be the most common The posters were sold by the famous Print Mint in Berkeley likely until Print Mint became no more in 1975.
