Some are based on his own experiences out on our vast and beautiful mountains hunting deer, and other times down on the flats searching out rabbits and geese. Even as he approaches his 80th birthday, he is full of memories of his earlier years of being out in the wide open spaces where the rivers run wild and threatening and the mountain peaks beckon - cold though they may be.

Rex Thomson's What a Life is a lively, first?hand account of New Zealand's venison?recovery years, told by a man who worked through the most dangerous and inventive period of the industry. Thomson writes with humour and candour about the early days of foot hunting, the shift to helicopters, the personalities who shaped the trade, and the risks that became part of everyday work in the hills. The book mixes bush yarns, close calls, and practical detail, supported by photographs that document machines, crews, and the landscapes where the work unfolded. Like many privately printed hunting memoirs, it has the immediacy of a story told by someone who lived it rather than polished it for publication.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A very close to new copy. This is David's third book - the second of interesting short stories. Then again there's stories of how things used to be, learning skills, farm life and survival skills. Along with his own stories, this time he has included the experiences of friends and other family members. The 'call of the wild' runs in the family it seems and so their stories add yet another flavour to this book which should stir up the senses for those outdoors-loving Kiwis who also enjoy reading of others' escapades. So, there's a bit of the past and a bit of the present; a variety of flavours for the interested reader to savour as you sit for a while with a cuppa, put your feet up and take in a story or two. Enjoy!

They are about the complexities of growing up, youthful and elderly romance, lost and fulfilled aspirations, and delicious revenge. Stories include humour, and insights into the spirit of the Coast: about its beauty, ancient Maori and recent history, village life and people, and the importance and demise of coal mining. Our 'whitebait children's' love of whitebaiting, though compelling for them, is just a glue that helps link memorable characters, places and times. The reader will come to like Millie, admire Molly and George, and love the wonderful long-deceased Lettie who 'saw' more in her short life than most of us ever will. And she was blind.

Little has been written about the nurses and less so the chaplains who served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War One. Several members of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists Nelson Branch have researched the lives of many of those nurses and chaplains who had an association with the Nelson Tasman area. This book captures the brave and courageous nurses and chaplains who were often very close to the firing line. Several chaplains were killed and ten New Zealand nurses went down with the ship when the Marquette was torpedoed. The nurses worked in frozen, leaking tents and draughty huts, often wearing tin hats and having to rush to a trench for safety when the hospitals were being bombed. (Publisher).

"'Zeff Veronese is one of this country's longest and most respected chamois and tahr hunters . His prowess with a rifle and camera have been long known and achieved national recognition within the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association. The collection of absorbing tales and photographs this back country author has provided, strongly conveys honest passion for our wild places and a sincere respect for the game animals hunted'--Kevin J. Whitelaw, New Zealand's Hunting Legends. Why do I hunt? That is a very hard question to answer. Both my grandparents were hunters and so was my father, my brothers and some of my uncles. I grew up in Italy during the war and the years after, in very tough times. However, the hunting instinct was never far away . When we arrived in New Zealand, we found it to be a goldmine for a hunter and made the most of it. The first ten years we hunted mainly for meat and always had a freezer full of game meat . Perhaps the last 40 years I have mainly hunted for trophies. Sometimes when in a good spot for a few days, I might see 30 or 40 animals and as they have no trophy value I don't fire a shot but happily film the events. Hunting is still good for me because I enjoy being in the wild. Camaraderie is an important ingredient on a hunt; there is nothing better than being in a tent or a hut with friends who have the same interests and are happy to share their funny stories after a hard day in the mountains". Drawing upon modern scholarly insights, Methodist historian, Gary Clover, investigates the nature of culture change and Maori `conversion from 18271855 during New Zealands early contact era. He narrates an absorbing tale of Maori and Pakeha inter-relationships, colourful personalities, and their foresight and failures.Clover explores how Hokianga Maori, amidst immense turmoil and change, adopted and `Maorified European technology, culture, and Christianity. Also how William White, a little known, extra-ordinary Wesleyan Mission Superintendent, moved far beyond the traditional missionary mould to help retain his `Mihanere chiefs tribal lands. They entrusted White with large tracts to hold in trust. At Mangungus chapel, school, farm, and sawyers pits, they learnt skills to participate in the new economy, becoming competitive against their European rivals. But Whites personality flaws and his opponents saw him dismissed in 1836. And outside forces by 1855 brought about the end of all three original Hokianga mission stations.A well-researched, scholarly, and detailed analysis of culture change and Maori `conversion in a region professional historians have largely neglected.
