The subject matter was divided to emphasize the following different types of problems: electrical measurements; acoustic measurements; scanning techniques; optical methods; backscatter methods; x-ray observations; accele rated life tests. It would be difficult to give a full discussion of such an Institute without going through the major points of each speaker. Clearly this is the proper task of the eventual readers of these Proceedings. Instead, it would be preferable to stress some general issues. What came through very clearly is that the measurements of the basic scientists in materials and device phenomena are of sub stantial immediate concern to the device technologies and end users. 796 pp. Englisch.

A scattered particle provides a dynamical probe of the target system. The practical problem of interest here is the scattering of a low energy electron by… an N-electron atom. It has been difficult in this area of study to achieve theoretical results that are even qualitatively correct, yet quantitative accuracy is often needed as an adjunct to experiment. The present book describes a quantitative theoretical method, or class of methods, that has been applied effectively to this problem. Quantum mechanical theory relevant to the scattering of an electron by an N-electron atom, which may gain or lose energy in the process, is summarized in Chapter 1. The variational theory itself is presented in Chapter 2, both as currently used and in forms that may facilitate future applications. The theory of multichannel resonance and threshold effects, which provide a rich structure to observed electron-atom scattering data, is presented in Chapter 3. Practical details of the computational implementation of the variational theory are given in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 summarize recent appli cations of the variational theory to problems of experimental interest, with many examples of the successful interpretation of complex structural fea tures observed in scattering experiments, and of the quantitative prediction of details of electron-atom scattering phenomena. 240 pp. Englisch.

Here we present in a systematic fashion half of the results found du ring this period, to wit, th…e results on denumerably infinite spaces (' ~O- forms') . Certain among the resul ts included here had of course been published at the time when they were found, others appear for the first time (the case, for example, in Chapters IX, X, XII where I in clude results contained in the Ph.D.theses by my students w. Allenspach, L. Brand, U. Schneider, M. Studer). If one wants to give an introduction to the geometric algebra of infinite dimensional quadratic spaces, a discussion of ~ -dimensional 0 spaces ideally serves the purpose. First, these spaces show a large nurober of phenomena typical of infinite dimensional spaces. Second, most proofs can be done by recursion which resembles the familiar pro cedure by induction in the finite dimensional Situation. Third, the student acquires a good feeling for the linear algebra in infinite di mensions because it is impossible to camouflage problems by topological expedients (in dimension ~O it is easy to see, in a given case, wheth er topological language is appropriate or not) . 436 pp. Englisch.

Over the years, the increasing popularity of t…he unit operation of crystallization has been clearly demonstrated by the steady increase in numbers of both the papers presented and the attendances at the meetings. The 6th Symposium (1-3 September 1975) was organized jointly with the European Federation of Chemical Engineering Working Party on Crystallization, and the 44 papers presented were arranged into four sessions - A: Secondary Nucleation, B: Crystal Growth Kinetics, C: Crystal Habit Modification, D: Crystallizer Design, E: Indus trial Crystallizer Operation and Case Studies. The same groupings are preserved in this edited version of the proceedings. This is the first time that the Industrial Crystallization Symposium papers have appeared in one volume. After the 5th (1972) Symposium, authors we.re encouraged to submit their papers to an international journal specializing in crystallization. However, the results were not altogether satisfactory in that less than one third of the papers presented at the meeting were offered for consideration. ' It was originally planned to combine aqueous solutions of macro molecules and disperse systems in one volume, but largely because of the extensive c…overage required by recent developments in aqueous solutions of proteins and synthetic polymers I decided to separate topics dealing with water in disperse systems. The systems treated in the present volume are of a complex nature so that the theoretical frameworks established earlier in Volume 1 and utilized in Volumes 2 and 3 cannot at the present time be applied. On the other hand the systems discussed in Volumes 4 and 5 in particular, border on the many biological and technological areas where important attributes are related to the common factor-water. Included among such diverse problem areas are food processing and preservation, cryopreservation, paper and textile finishing, membrane processes, hemodynamics, etc. It is to be hoped that in days to come some of the results and principles discussed in these five volumes can be applied to improve our understanding of the complex in teractions in medically and industrially important spheres of scientific ac tivity. An age seems to have passed since the concept of creating this treatise was first discussed, and since work began on Volume 1, much has happened in the science of Water; some of the recent developments were highlighted at this year's Gordon Research Conference in Plymouth, N. Many… articles treat this method; however, there exists no modern textbook suitable for the beginner as well as the practician and theoretician. In this monograph the author intends to fill this need to present the prin ciples of x-ray fluorescence analysis and to develop a theoretical under standing of the technique. Both principles and theory w.ill be treated exten sively, for they are the basis for successful practical application of the method. X-ray fluorescence, on the other hand, is often carried out exclusively because of its practical usefulness. For this reason theoretical investigations are used exclusively as a basis for practical work and the multitude of applications, which constitute the value of the x-ray fluores cence method, will be explained on the basis of simple theory. The idea to write this monograph originated and developed when efforts to train coworkers required a more complete treatise. This NATO Institute was a conti nuation of aseries of NATO Advanced Study Institutes of Worshops which took place at regular intervals till 1979. This is the first time, however, that charge density wave transport and electronic properties of low dimen sional organic conductors are treated on an equal footing. The program of the Institute was framed by tutorial lectures in the theories and experiments of low dimensional conductors. The bulk of the course covered two series of low-dimensional mate rials with their respective properties. 1) The I-D inorganic conductors exhibiting the phenomena of sliding charge density waves, narrow band noise, memory effects, etc .- 2) Low-dimensional crystallized organic conductors giving rise to various possibilities of ground states, spin-Peierls, spin density wave, Peierls, superconductivity and magnetic-field induced spin density wave, etc . GC-MS was mandated for the analysis of 114 compounds, yet the spectra of many of them, if they ha…d been recorded at all, were scattered throughout the literature. Moreover, it soon became apparent that, even if a sufficient number of instruments could be made available to undertake the task of monitoring 114 substances in the effluents of 21 categories of industry, the personnel could not be trained to perform the analyses and interpret the results. The solution to this problem has been the development of highly automated mass spectrometers which can be operated by personnel without the traditional research training. This book is for the new breed of mass spectroscopist who is not interested in the esoteric details of mass spectral fragmentation, but who merely wishes to identify specific pollutants in effluents. Our inclusion of com prehensive lists of synonyms and bibliographic data should make the book of even greater value to the reader who is not too familiar with the idiosyncrasies of chemical nomenclature and the scientific literature. The experienced mass spectroscopist should also benefit from having all of the data collected together in one volume. The complexity and high technology required in manufacturing…structural parts with these materials as well as the need for fundamental description of their processing and property characteristics necessitates a close col laboration between industrial and academic researchers. This col laboration has become significant not only in solving specific tech nical problems, but in providing a much needed supply of scientists with training and background focused on anticipated demand for further advances in composite usage. The fact that the transportation industry with its current international character has a vital interest in composite materials for weight savings applications has provided a strong incentive for extending these developments beyond national boundaries. An excel lent example of an established international venture is the building of the new generation commercial aircraft by the Boeing Company with composite parts manufactured by Aerita1ia in Italy. Accordingly, we organized a Joint U. S. -Italy Symposium on Composite Materials in Italy which was successfully held on June 15-19, 1981, under the primary sponsorship of NSF in the U. S. The VIII Int…ernational Congress of theRE Society was held in Jerusalem, Israel, June 18-23, 1978. The Congress had as its scientific objective a wide range of sub jects concerning the RE System, especially as related to macro phage function and interaction with lymphocytes. Emphasis of the Congress was placed on the nature and function of macrophages and other cells of the RE System with reference to immune responses, anti-infectious activity, tumor immunity, autoimmunity, and trans plant rejection. The secretion of soluble factors by macrophages and lymphocytes and the mode of action of these factors on other cells was stressed. During the Congress some discussion was entertained concerning the controversy as to what constitutes the 'RE System' per se. Some investigators feel that the phagocytic activity of ~~crophages is the most important aspect of the RE System playing also a major role in many parameters of immunity. Mononuclear phagocytes include tissue macrophages as well as cir culating monocytes and their precursors. Although phagocytosis is a major functional activity of these cells, it is only one of several activities. 628 pp. Englisch.
