Older people are perceived as a single homogeneous group, and the experiment of ageing characterized as being the same for all individuals, irrespective of the diversity of their circumstances before the onset of old age. In this book, detailed statistical material is used to portray the circum stances of older people in modern society in an attempt to evaluate the appropriateness (or otherwise) of the major stereotypes of later life. This volume does not address ageing from a psychological or micro-social per spective. In particular, we do not explore major issues relating to old age. Rather we feel that, from the extensive collection of surveys concerned with the elderly, we can provide a context within which individual eld erly people can be studied from more anthropological or biographical perspectives. 276 pp. Englisch.

The conference ('The Human Side of Prenatal Diagnosis') dealt with emotional, ethical and legal issues in prenatal screening and diagnosis. It took place in March 1992 at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in London and was attended by obstetricians, paediatricians, geneticists, midwives and ultrasonographers from the North West Thames Health Region. The demand for places at the conference far exceeded the number of places avail able and many people who attended expressed the hope that we would be organizing similar conferences in the future. This confirmed our belief that we were not the only ones preoccupied with the human issues raised by the new technologies and encouraged us to work towards this publication. Prenatal diagnosis and the possibility of selective termination of affected pregnancies is part of a wider move towards repro ductive choice. Like contraception and assisted conception, it can make a major difference to the lives of some people. In our culture, we tend to view choice as a good thing. We look upon it as our right to choose our occupation, our partner, the place where we live, the books that we read and the way that we vote. 244 pp. Englisch.

Earlier, when I joined Age Concern, I had been struck by the paucity of knowledge of old age abuse. Developing these skills is ultimately rewarding both personally and professionally and nurses should be encouraged to scrutinize their practice carefully and identify areas where improvements could be made. Over the years I have developed a… pas sionate interest in the subject and there is little doubt that in general terms the level of knowledge and awareness relating to the topic has increased. Despite this it is still apparent that continence promotion remains a somewhat fringe subject, both in practice and in theory. One of the difficulties which has become clear from discussion with nurses of all grades is that they feel that the only people who are capable of mastering the practicalities of continence promotion are full time continence advisers. It is unlikely that this view has stemmed from con tinence advisers themselves (those that I know are usually very grateful for all the help that they can get), or even from a reluctance on the part of nursing staff to develop their skills. The root of the difficulty appears to be a lack of awareness on the part of nurses of the skills that are required for continence promotion and also how they can be put into practice. The aim of this book is to provide a reference text to enable all practising nurses to take an active part in continence pro motion and the appropriate management of incontinence. 188 pp. Englisch.

Most, however, are written with medicine in mind. This book is written mainly by experienced neonatal nurses, although some chapters have been written by th…e appropriate specialists. lt is intended primarily for nurses who Iook after sick infants and is not intended to be an exhaustive reference but to address some of the issues and concepts of neonatal care in the 1990s. Nursing models are an important part of neonatal care in the 1990s but this book has not been written within this framework. There are several reasons for this: arguably no current model is ideally suited to neonates and the favouring of one particular model might restriet the book's applicability. Also, as contributors from other disciplines were invited to contribute we were anxious that these chapters did not stand out as oddities. Additionally, much neonatal care overlaps and were a framework to be used in its entirety for each nursing care chapter we feit that there could be some repeti tion; conversely, if a framework was fragmented in some chap ters to cover specific areas of care, we were concemed that the overall effect would have been 'bitty'. We feit that such treat ment of nursing models would have been unjustifiable. While front-line investigative personnet -such as child care social workers, specialist police officers, police surgeons and paediatricians -have a number of anxieties about working with child sexual abuse cases, they can usually avail themselves of specific training, detailed books and articles and the support of experienced colleagues to help sustain them through any difficulties. It is non-investigating workers on the periphery of child protection work, many of whom are health professionals, who are left feeling worried and vulnerable. The first was carried out in 1986 by the Health and Safety Commission Health Services Advisory Committee (1987). They conducte…d a comprehensive survey of the inddence of violence to 5000 workers in five separate health districts. The results from the 3000 people who eventually replied made many in the caring professions worried. One in 200 workers had suffered a major injury following a violent attack during the previous year and a further one in ten needed first aid following an assault. Other surveys also showed high risks: of sodal service staff, 6% had suffered an attack in the past 5 years (Saunders, 1987), and sodal workers were at even high er risk. 29% had been assaulted in the last 3 years (Rowett, 1986). In addition, 4% of general practitioners had experienced an attack resulting in injury in the past year (D'Urso and Hobbs, 1989). Clinical psychologists were also at risk - 53% had been assaulted at least once during their professional career and 18% in the past year (Perkins, 1991). Media reports of extreme violence seem to be the tip of the iceberg. Many staff are attacked and some of these attacks have serious physical or psychological consequences that interfere with the victim' s ability to return to their full working capadty. The seven years since the first edition of this book have seen a revolution in the way that Health Se…rvices in the United Kingdom are organized. One of the original co-authors, Mike Church, has moved on through several NHS posts to independent practice in the area of management consultancy. He has been replaced by Carol Martin, a lecturer in the Psychology of Old Age in our department. In addition to the changes in the NHS there has been an explosion in the knowledge base of old age psychiatry, with several journals now devoted to the subject. A new diagnostic classificatory system (ICD10) has also been launched. In preparing this second edition, we have tried to remain true to the spirit of the first edition, whilst incorporating new knowledge and the changing context of our practice. Throughout the text we have used the terms 'patient' and 'client' interchangeably. The people we serve are the same whatever we call them! We have also, generally, but not always referred to patients in the female gender, since this reflects the fact that more women than men survive into old age.
