At the beginning, it was a tenuous alliance between physicians in quite different medical subspecialties-urology and psychiatry. As the alliance was forged, subspecialty rivalries and mistrust were replaced by a common clinical interest in the diagnosis and treatment of erectile problems. We quickly became aware of the high prevalence of such disorders, how poorly prepared we were to make accurate and re sponsible diagnosis and treatment plans, and how complicated an etiol ogical diagnosis could prove to be. A variety of biological and psychological influences bear on sexual function, and in many clinical contexts, diagnosis and treatment planning involves consideration of complex interactive var iables. The need for an expanded multidisciplinary team became obvious. Space was limited to about 110 seats, with representatives from nine countries attending. These countries included Canada, England, France, Japan, Mexico, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The symposium consisted of 21 formal papers. The twenty second, by Dr. U. Fehr, was not read, but is included in these proceedings. The manu script of the interesting paper on acoustic propagation in a turbulent medium which was read by Dr. O. K. Mawardi was not received in time for publication in these proceedings, and we look forward to its publication perhaps at a later date in the open literature. In addition to the formal papers there were three informal presentations at the end of the meeting which were given by Dr. A. Lohmann, by L. A. Cram and K. O. Rossiter, and by T. S. Graham, which are also included in these proceedings. At the end of the formal presentations Dr. Lewis Larmore summarized the symposium and discussed some of the highlights. The book is a collection of papers from a symposium convened on the subject for the 1977 National Meeting of the Entomological Society of America and invitational papers on commodities not covered during the symposium. In recent years, books have appeared on 'integrated pest management (IPM)'; however, most of these have concentrated on field crop IPM with an occasional chapter on fruits. No publication presently exists which brings together information on the pest management programs currently being conducted on the major nut crops, almonds, pecans and walnuts. Because it is the first treatment for almonds and walnuts, the authors of these chapters have attempted not only to present the current IPM technology but the historical data which led to the contemporary programs.
