The difficulty of the problem is attributed to the large number of often conflicting factors that affect the routing quality. Traditional techniques have approached routing by ignoring some of these factors and imposing…unnecessary constraints in order to make routing tractable. In addition to the imposition of these restrictions, which simplify the problems to a degree but at the same time reduce the routing quality, traditional approaches use brute force. They often transform the problem into mathematical or graph problems and completely ignore the specific knowledge about the routing task that can greatly help the solution. This thesis overcomes some of the above problems and presents a system that performs routing close to what human designers do. In other words it heavily capitalizes on the knowledge of human expertise in this area, it does not impose unnecessary constraints, it considers all the different factors that affect the routing quality, and most importantly it allows constant user interaction throughout the routing process. To achieve the above, this thesis presents background about some representative techniques for routing and summarizes their characteristics. It then studies in detail the different factors (such as minimum area, number of vias, wire length, etc.) that affect the routing quality, and the different criteria (such as vertical/horizontal constraint graph, merging, minimal rectilinear Steiner tree, etc.) that can be used to optimize these factors.

At Julie Ingelfinger's suggestion, at the end of each panel discussion I have added a comment to highlight the main points as I see them. Otherwise, the format remains as in past editions: the papers given related to the four major topic areas, each followed by panel and registrant discussion. Although the transcription is almost verbatim, you will not find the names of the discussants, purposely omitted to ease my editorial work and to encourage everyone to speak candidly. Some of the questions and answers are those submitted to the panelists after the sessions, incorporated here by request. Also, frequent references are made to others' work but their names have been omitted.

It is undoubtedly difficult to determine, even in normal women, the behavior of renal hemodynamics throughout gestation, since the…fear of impairing a new life (i.e., the fetus's life) will limit, for ethical reasons, the use or the frequent repetition of diagnostic tests on the mother. On the other hand, the study of complicated pregnancy even for diagnostic purposes (for planning adequate treatment), except in a few countries that are known for the advanced health education of the population, has to face serious difficulties. First of all, pregnant women usually seek the help of an obstetrician when gestation is already in an advanced stage. This makes it difficult to determine when and how asymptomatic signs of any disease discovered during pregnancy have first occurred. A second difficulty is that frequently the patient does not know whether a given disease has preceded pregnancy. Pregnancy is a condition of young women, and a young woman frequently has never seen a physician; thus, no urine analysis or blood tests have been performed before the gestation. Not infrequently, even blood pressure has never been measured. This will make it difficult to classify hypertension discovered in late pregnancy as pregnancy-induced hypertension or as chronic hypertension in pregnancy.

For example, freshwater inflow to estuaries varies daily in response to short-term events such as storms, seasonally, and between years as a result of longer-term climatic variability. Other important components of weather, e. g. wind speed/ direction and daily insolation, also vary over time scales ranging from hours to years. Tidal amplitude changes continuously with dominant frequencies associated with the semi-diurnal cycle, the fortnightly neap-spring, and the semi-annual cycle. Temporal dynamics of these driving forces evoke responses in the form of changing (I) circulation patterns and mixing, (2) sediment composition and transport, (3) solute speciation and distribution, (4) composition and abundance of particulates, (5) biomass, species composition, and productivity of plant and animal communities, (6) rates of material exchange between the sediments, water column, and atmosphere, and (7) bioavailability of trace metals and other pollutants. The purpose of this book is to examine the temporal dynamics of these properties and processes in the San Francisco Bay estuary.

Although the term metastasis was first coined by Recamier in 1829, only in the past ten years have there been intensive scientific investigations into the mechanisms by which tumor cells metastasize. What has emerged is a complex process of host-tumor cell interactions which has been termed the metastatic cascade. Due to the complexity of the metastatic process, the study of metastasis is multifaceted and involves elements of such areas as differentiation, en zymology, genetics, hematology, immunology, membrane biochemistry and molecular biology. The major objectives of this book were to present the most recent advances in our understanding of how tumor cells metastasize to secondary sites by the leading experts in the biology of tumor invasion and metastasis. We hope that this book will lead to new concepts for the treatment of subclinical metastatic cancer. The chapters in this book address both the basic science of metastasis and potential clinical therapies directed toward interruption of the metastatic cascade or toward eradication of subclinical metastases. Many relevant topics have been omitted due to space considerations and thus the topics included reflect the prej udices of the editors.

' It is not clear if this private opinion of Darwin was one that he held to be absolutely true, or was one of those opinions that, as with most of us, coincides with our 'bad days,' but is replaced with a more optimistic view on our 'good days. ' I hold the sense of the statement to be true in general, but not with regard to scientists never reading each other's work. Even if that were true however, the present essay. would still have been written as a proof of earnestness. This essay outlines my personal view of how nonlinear mathematics may be of value in formulating models outside the physical sciences. This perspective has developed over a number of years during which time I have repeatedly been amazed at how an 'accepted' model would fail to faithfully characterize the full range of avail able data because of its implicit or explicit dependence on linear concepts. This essay is intended to demonstrate how linear ideas have come to dominate and therefore limit a scientist's ability to understand any given class of phenomena. 220 pp. Englisch.

But during the last generation or two the situation has steadily become worse for readers who may want to know what philosophers of their own time are doing. And this is true even though many writers have been learning to avoid the unnecessary jargon that disfigures so much of traditional philosophy. No matter how direct the English style of recent philosophers may be, their methodic purposes and argument style will re main obscure to anyone who has not gone to considerable trouble to be introduced to them. Then too, the closeness of their analysis and the con sequent narrowness of many of the issues pursued make it hard to catch onto the argument without some familiarity with slightly earlier discus sions from which those issues emerged. Slinn. We wrote them as a general introduction to the physical processes in the atmosphere and ocean whic…h govern the transport of gases and particles in and between the two media. Our audience was to be graduate students in physical chemistry of air and sea, and research workers wishing to get started in this or a related field. It was Dr. Alan Longhurst, Director-General of the Atlantic Region, Canada Department of Fisheries and Oceans, who pointed out that our introduction had a far wider audience: in fact, anyone with a scientific background who needs a basic under standing of the physics of the atmosphere and ocean. Dr. D.J. Larner of Reidel agreed, and this book is the result. Since we expended considerable effort to satisfy the demands of the physical chemists, and also discussed the explanations much with our colleagues at home, we expect the reader will find the two parts to be complementary and useful as a unified reference text. On the other hand, since it was designed as background material for a text on air-sea gas exchange and trans port, the more experienced reader will be aware that the picture presented emphasizes transport and exchange processes while it ignores others. I have made scrupulous efforts throughout to avoid an anthropomorphic approach to mammalian behaviour. Terms such as 'strategy', 'evaluation' or 'choice' do not therefore imply conscious planning, but are used neutrally in the way in which they would be applied to a chess-playing computer. In the case of mammals, the programmer was natural selection. While I am fully aware that human beings are mammals, any detailed consideration of human social behaviour lies outside the scope of this book.
