The word control is used here in a rather wide sense, including decision making, coordination and planning as well as activities such as the design and implementation of organizational structures or computerized… information systems. There are various ways of defining complexity; here we use this term to indicate that the organizations in question consist of many sub organizations which are operationally interdependent but at the same time have a fair degree of independence of control. The control of the interactions between these suborganizations through coordination will be a key issue in this book. The discussion will be confined to industrial organizations; our results are only applicable to a limited extent to other types of organizations such as universities, hospitals or government offices. The main contribution we intend to make in this book is the development of a system oj concepts on control and coordination in industrial organizations which can be used in the design of organizational control structures such as planning systems, information systems or relations between positions or departments. Rather eclectic use has been made of various scientific disCiplines in the development of this conceptual system with some bias towards the use of system theory and cybernetics. The book is intended for professional workers in the field of 'organizational control technology', such as automation and .organization specialists in complex organizations and workers in the related disCiplines at University.

The models may require discrete lags, with the use of dela…y-differential equations, or distributed lags, with the use of integro-differential equations. In these lecture notes I discuss the reasons for including lags, especially distributed lags, in biological models. These reasons may be inherent in the system studied, or may be the result of simplifying assumptions made in the model used. I examine some of the techniques available for studying the solution of the equations. A large proportion of the material presented relates to a special method that can be applied to a particular class of distributed lags. This method uses an extended set of ordinary differential equations. I examine the local stability of equilibrium points, and the existence and frequency of periodic solutions. I discuss the qualitative effects of lags, and how these differ according to the choice of discrete or distributed lag. The models studied are drawn from the population dynamiCS of single species (logistic growth, the chemostat) and of interacting pairs of species (predation, mutualism), from cell population dynamiCS (haemopoiesis) and from biochemical kinetics (the Goodwin oscillator). The last chapter is devoted to a population model employing difference equations. All these models include non-linear terms. 128 pp. Englisch.

Its objective is the classification of quadratic forms over the field of rational numbers (Hasse-Minkowski theorem). It is achieved in Chapter IV. The first three chap…ters contain some preliminaries: quadratic reciprocity law, p-adic fields, Hilbert symbols. Chapter V applies the preceding results to integral quadratic forms of discriminant ± I. These forms occur in various questions: modular functions, differential topology, finite groups. The second part (Chapters VI and VII) uses 'analytic' methods (holomor phic functions). Chapter VI gives the proof of the 'theorem on arithmetic progressions' due to Dirichlet; this theorem is used at a critical point in the first part (Chapter Ill, no. 2.2). Chapter VII deals with modular forms, and in particular, with theta functions. Some of the quadratic forms of Chapter V reappear here. The two parts correspond to lectures given in 1962 and 1964 to second year students atthe Ecole Normale Superieure. A redaction of these lectures in the form of duplicated notes, was made by J.-J. Sansuc (Chapters I-IV) and J.-P. Ramis and G. Ruget (Chapters VI-VII). They were very useful to me; I extend here my gratitude to their authors. 132 pp. Englisch.

The idea of holding one or more small colloquia de…voted to the topics of rational choice in science and scientific progress originated in a conversation in the summer of 1973 between one of the editors (GR) and the late Imre Lakatos. Unfortunately Lakatos himself was never able to see this project through, but his thought-provoking methodology of scientific research programmes was ably expounded and defended by his successors. Indeed, this volume continues and deepens the debate inaugurated in Criticism and the Growth of Knowledge (edited by Imre Lakatos and Alan Musgrave), a book which grew out of a conference held in 1965. That debate has continued during the years that have passed since that conference. The group of discussions about the place of rationality in science which have been held between those who emphasize the history of science (with Feyerabend and Kuhn as the most prominent exponents) and the critical rationalists (Popper and his followers), with Imre Lakatos defending a middle ground, these discussions were seen by almost all commentators as the most important event in the philosophy of science in the last decade. In this text, some fundamental theoretical and practical questions… are resolved. Despite recent research activity in the area, the crucial subject of the uniqueness of the reconstruction and the effect of noise in the data posed some unsettled fundamental questions. In particular, Kennan Smith proved that if we describe an object by a C^inf_o function, i.e., infinitely differentiable with compact support, then there are other objects with the same shape, i.e., support, which can differ almost arbitrarily and still have the same projections in finitely many directions. On the other hand, he proved that objects in finite dimensional function spaces are uniquely determined by a single projection for almost all angles, i.e., except on a set of measure zero. Along these lines, Herman and Rowland in 'Three Methods for reconstructing objects from x-rays: a comparative study' (1973) showed that reconstructions obtained from the commonly used algorithms can grossly misrepresent the object and that the algorithm which produced the best reconstruction when using noiseless data gave unsatisfactory results with noisy data. Despite recent research activity in the area, the crucial subject of the uniqueness of the reconstruction and the effect of noise in the data posed some unsettled fundamental questions. In particular, Kennan Smith proved that if we describe an object by a C^inf_o function, i.e., infinitely differentiable with compact support, then there are other objects with the same shape, i.e., support, which can differ almost arbitrarily and still have the same projections in finitely many directions. On the other hand, he proved that objects in finite dimensional function spaces are uniquely determined by a single projection for almost all angles, i.e., except on a set of measure zero. Along these lines, Herman and Rowland in 'Three Methods for reconstructing objects from x-rays: a comparative study' (1973) showed that reconstructions obtained from the commonly used algorithms can grossly misrepresent the object and that the algorithm which produced the best reconstruction when using noiseless data gave unsatisfactory results with noisy data. Equally important are reports in Science, and personal communications by radiologists indicating that in medical practice failure rates of reconstruction vary from four to twenty percent. within this work, the mathematical dilemma posed by Kennan Smith's result is discussed and clarified. 192 pp. Englisch.

Its objective is the classification of quadratic forms over the field of rational numbers (Hasse-Minkowski theorem). It is achieved in Chapter IV. The first three chapters… contain some preliminaries: quadratic reciprocity law, p-adic fields, Hilbert symbols. Chapter V applies the preceding results to integral quadratic forms of discriminant ± I. These forms occur in various questions: modular functions, differential topology, finite groups. The second part (Chapters VI and VII) uses 'analytic' methods (holomor phic functions). Chapter VI gives the proof of the 'theorem on arithmetic progressions' due to Dirichlet; this theorem is used at a critical point in the first part (Chapter Ill, no. 2.2). Chapter VII deals with modular forms, and in particular, with theta functions. Some of the quadratic forms of Chapter V reappear here. The two parts correspond to lectures given in 1962 and 1964 to second year students atthe Ecole Normale Superieure. A redaction of these lectures in the form of duplicated notes, was made by J.-J. Our decision to publish the Proceedings of this Sym posium was based on a number of reasons. The subject of more or less grave adverse side-effects… of oral contra ception is of major importance for all women. If the research insti tutions of Gynecology make fundamental mistakes in this subject, then the trust in them will diminish substantially. National institutions will have to shoulder a part of that burden, too, if they do not suc ceed in timely prevention of grave and widespread health risks and damages. Adverse side-effects of oral contraception become only apparent in later life and probably only after a latent interval of at least 10 years. The German female population will be fully exposed to that situation during the next decade. Up to now about 40 % of the women aged 35 years or older have no experience with the pill. Ten years later nearly all of them shall have used the pill for a short period at least. If serious long-term side-effects exist, we have to build up our research strategy now to detect these health hazards in time. Large-scale studies cannot be generated just out of nothing, the development and review of ideas in a pilot phase is necessary. The pilot phase of a German long-term study began three years ago. We shall report our experiences of that pilot phase, because this might be of value for other projects of this kind. 252 pp. Englisch.

The result is what many will find a strange combina tion of views - a Platonistic theory of attributes, where attributes are univer sals or multiply exemplifiable entities whose existence is independent of 'the world of flux', and an Aristotelian theory of substance, where substances are basic unities not reducible to metaphysically more fundamental kinds of things. Part One is concerned with the ontology of attributes. After distinguishing three different patterns of metaphysical thinking about attributes, I examine, in turn, the phenomena of predication, resemblance, and higher order quanti fication. I argue that none of these phenomena by itself is sufficient to establish the inescapability of a Platonistic interpretation of attributes.
