Bunzl argues that any successful account of explanation must deal with two very different contexts - one static and one dyna…mic. Traditionally, theories of explanation have been built for the former of these two contexts. That is to say, they are designed to show how it is that a 'finished' body of scientific knowledge can be put to explanatory use. But finished sciences are few and far between. Real 'explanation' also occurs in a dynamical context in which questions are asked and answers are given as theories are in the process of being constructed. Here, Bunzl argues that attending to explanation produced under these dynamic circumstances undermines prominent features of the theory of explanation produced in the traditional static context.

The book discusses the convergence of Krylov sub…space methods for solving fixed point problems (\*), and focuses on the dynamical aspects of the iteration processes. For example, there are many similarities between the evolution of a Krylov subspace process and that of linear operator semigroups, in particular in the beginning of the iteration. A lifespan of an iteration might typically start with a fast but slowing phase. Such a behavior is sublinear in nature, and is essentially independent of whether the problem is singular or not. Then, for nonsingular problems, the iteration might run with a linear speed before a possible superlinear phase. All these phases are based on different mathematical mechanisms which the book outlines. The goal is to know how to precondition effectively, both in the case of 'numerical linear algebra' (where one usually thinks of first fixing a finite dimensional problem to be solved) and in function spaces where the 'preconditioning' corresponds to software which approximately solves the original problem. 180 pp. Englisch.

This particular course, that was given at the I…nternational Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, has been dedicated to the theory of satellite altimetry as a response to the increasing need of scientific work in this field due to important recent and forthcoming space mission. The course was conceived to supply a good theoretical basis in both disciplines, i.e. geodesy and oceanography, which are deeply involved in the analysis and in the use of the altimetric signal. The main items of interest are the physical theory of ocean circulation, the theory of tides and the ocean time-variability, from the point of view of oceanography and the orbit theory, with particular regard to the formation of the radial orbital error, the so-called cross over adjustment, the analysis of geodetic boundary value problems, the integrated determination of the gravity field and of the radial orbital error, from the point of view of geodesy. All these arguments are treated from the foundation by very-well experts of the various fields, to introduce the reader into the more difficult subjects on which advanced research is currently performed. The peculiarity of the book is in its interdisciplinarity as it can serve to both communities of oceanographers and geodesists to get acquainted with advanced aspects one of the other. 500 pp. Englisch.

It is now used by industry as part of the software (and hardware) development process… in both Europe and the USA. It is currently undergoing BSI standardisation in the UK, and has been proposed for ISO standardisation internationally. In recent years researchers have begun to focus increasingly on the development of techniques and tools to encourage the wider application of Z and other formal methods and notations. This volume contains papers from the Seventh Annual Z User Meeting, held in London in December 1992. In contrast to previous years the meeting concentrated specifically on industrial applications of Z, and a high proportion of the participants came from an industrial background. The theme is well represented by the four invited papers. Three of these discuss ways in which formal methods are being introduced, and the fourth presents an international survey of industrial applications. It also provides a reminder of the improvements which are needed to make these methods an accepted part of software development. In addition the volume contains several submitted papers on the industrial use of Z, two of which discuss the key area of safety-critical applications. There are also a number of papers related to the recently-completed ZIP project. The papers cover all the main areas of the project including methods, tools, and the development of a Z Standard, the first publicly-available version of which was made available at the meeting. Finally the volume contains a select Z bibliography, and section on how to access information on Z through comp.specification.z, the international, computer-based USENET newsgroup. By and large the classical theory assumes that the underlying environment in which evo…lution transpires is both constant and stable - the theory is in this sense deterministic. In reality, on the other hand, nature is almost always changing and unstable. We do not yet possess a complete theory of natural selection in stochastic environ ments. Perhaps it has been thought that such a theory is unimportant, or that it would be too difficult. Our own view is that the time is now ripe for the development of a probabilistic theory of natural selection. The present volume is an attempt to provide an elementary introduction to this probabilistic theory. Each author was asked to con tribute a simple, basic introduction to his or her specialty, including lively discussions and speculation. We hope that the book contributes further to the understanding of the roles of 'Chance and Necessity' (Monod 1971) as integrated components of adaptation in nature. 204 pp. Englisch.
