So much so, that when the author tried to recommend to his stude…nts a suitable and substantial work of study and/or reference about the experience of the EMS and its possible future evolution --- no book could be found. Thus, the author set out to write the present work. The author's aim is not to give a historical account of the EHS. Rather, the intention is to place the experience in a major historical context wherein the System is seen an important transitional phase on the road to the implementation of a full economic and rronetary union (EMU) - When examining the earlier plans for an EMU which saw the light of day between 1969 and 1970 (already so long ago!) clear reasons emerge why the original six founder Member States of the EEC should have found it logical to embark upon the road to an El'1U - 'p=vided the political will to do so existed'. Thus, they had become highly integrated and were conducting half their trade with each other. Then, there was the desire to integrate still further ---- eventually leading (perhaps) to a political union.

As this book shows, these almost ideal reagents are easy to prepare with high specificity under mild conditions and yet react quite readily with a great var…iety of substrates. Many compounds can be metallated directly at positions which would otherwise be difficult to substitute. Functional groups and heteroatoms already present in a molecule direct metallation to sites in their vicinity. The rules which govern polar organometallic chemistry often are not dominated by the usual n-delocalization and inductive effects; dipolar interactions, chelation, polarization, etc. often can be much more important. This affords novel synthetic opportunities. A good example is the development of a basically new type of aromatic substitution chemistry not based on positively charged intermediates. Seebach's injunction, 'Thinking of polar organometallic compounds as carbanions is an impoverishment rather than a simplification' (International Symposium, Chemistry of Carbanions, Durham 1984), stresses the need to consider the metal not only as an integral, but perhaps also as the key component of these reagents. Rather than wandering off as solvated cations and acting as uninvolved spectators, the metals, rather than the anion moieties, can initiate and govern the subsequent reactions. To the founders of this field, e. g. Grignard, Ziegler, Gilman, Wittig, and their followers, the metal was critical. John MuIr As recently as 1970 the problem of obtaining optimal estimates for variance components in a mixed linear model with unbalanced data was considered a miasma… of competing, generally weakly motivated estimators, with few firm gUidelines and many simple, compelling but Unanswered questions. Then in 1971 two significant beachheads were secured: the results of Rao [1971a, 1971b] and his MINQUE estimators, and related to these but not originally derived from them, the results of Seely [1971] obtained as part of his introduction of the no~ion of quad ratic subspace into the literature of variance component estimation. These two approaches were ultimately shown to be intimately related by Pukelsheim [1976], who used a linear model for the com ponents given by Mitra [1970], and in so doing, provided a mathemati cal framework for estimation which permitted the immediate applica tion of many of the familiar Gauss-Markov results, methods which had earlier been so successful in the estimation of the parameters in a linear model with only fixed effects. Moreover, this usually enor mous linear model for the components can be displayed as the starting point for many of the popular variance component estimation tech niques, thereby unifying the subject in addition to generating answers. 160 pp. Englisch.

References to it have been noted in Egyp tian papyri and in Greco-Roman medical treatises. Since those times it has remained a most important eye infection, and indeed trachoma is still a major cause of blindness in rural communities, affecting probably 6 million people (Dawson). The causal agent of trachoma was identified by Halberstaeter and von Provazek in a much-quoted but little-read paper published over 75 years ago. It was after the isolation and demonstration of the growth of the causal agent of trachoma, Chlamy dia trachomatis, by Tang and his colleagues in China in the late 1950s that there was an enormous increase in our knowledge of these agents. The real explosion of knowledge and interest in Chlamydia, however, has been in the last decade. With the growing awareness of the extraordinary commonness of chlamydial infections, not only in developing countries but also in the highly developed countries, has come a considerable interest from all areas concerned with medical science, from clinicians to molecular biologists. 136 pp. Englisch.

The significance of this lies not only in the fact that, in the five years from 1976 to 1980, more than 500 papers on t…his question were published in various journals throughout the world and at least three major international discussions were held (see p. 17). The newness of the discussion of the topic stems from the qualitative reinterpretation of the physical essence of the phenomenon and its role in the ocean, particularly in the processes of mixing and structure formation. While in the past the conventional view of fronts as boundaries between large scale water masses of the ocean only led to the recognition of convenient classi fication limits created by nature itself, there is now a tendency to study oceanic fronts as integral elements of the dynamics of oceanic waters. As we understand it, fronts are being associated more and more with the dynamic and kinematic features which arise when kinetic energy and enstrophy are transmitted through a cascade of scales characterizing various forms of motion of a stratified medium in laterally confined oceanic basins. We are beginning to get a better understanding of the role synoptic-scale oceanic eddies play in the process of frontogenesis in the ocean. 344 pp. Englisch.

Incidentally, I chose this name, which is very common in German speaking countries, to suggest an average citizen, just like the man next door. I should like to thank Springer-Verlag for deciding to publish this book in the language in which many of the discoveries described here were first formulated. Technische Fortschritte ermoglichen immer wieder neue, bessere Losungen fUr die an ein Antriebssystem gestellten Forderungen beziiglich Regeldyna mik, Pendelmomenten, Wirkungsgrad, Netzriickwirkungen, Geriiuschabstrahlung und Betriebssicherheit. 1m voriiegenden Band 2 werden geregelte elektrische Antriebe behandelt. Zuniichst wird der heute am weitesten verbreitete geregelte elektrische Antrieb, die stromrichter gespeiste Gleichstrom-Kommutatormaschine, eingehend beschrieben. Es wird gezeigt, daB dieser Antrieb neben vielen Vorteilen einen groBen Nachteil hat, den mechani schen Kommutator; dieser bedarf einerseits der Wartung, andererseits bestimmt er die Grenzleistung in Abhiingigkeit von der Drehzahl. In den letzten fiinfundzwanzig lahren wurden vielfiiltige Antriebslosungen in Form von geregelten stromrichterge speisten Drehstrommaschinen erarbeitet, mit denen die durch den mechanischen Kommutator gegebenen Einschriinkungen iiberwunden werden konnten. Ich habe versucht, die vielen he ute auf dem Markt angebotenen Antriebsvarianten, die sich sowohl hinsichtlich der Art der eingesetzten elektrischen Maschinen als auch der verwendeten Strom richter und der angewandten Steuer-und Regelverfahren unter scheiden, systematisch zu gliedern. From time eternal, man has tried to explain the numerous configurations and lines of the hand in order to re…veal the true character of a person and to display his life. The importance of the symbolism of the hand is reflected in its role in the cultural life of the old world. Therefore, it is not astanishing that the first book about the hand, by Johannes Hartlieb, was devoted to Chiromancy, and that it was so successful that it went through four editions since the second half of the fifteenth century. When Wilhelm Röntgen in 1895 asked his wife to lay her hand on a photographic plate covered with black paper and exposed it to the radiation he had just discovered, it marked the beginning of radiology. Today the study of the hand concerns only 2%-4% of the activity of radiology. It nevertheless reveals an amazing quantity and variety of pathology.
