However, as the demand for higher storage capacity continues in the modem information era, a need arises to explore other possibilities to help meet the ever-growing demand. Advanced coding and detection are one such possibility, providing an efficient, cost-effective means to increase data capacity. In fact, with the advent of modem Ie technology which has enabled real-time implementation of increasingly complex signal processing algorithms, advanced coding and detection are rapidly becoming a major issue in the development of improved data storage products. While there have been remarkable advances in recent years in the areas of both coding and detection for data storage, this book focuses only on data detection, or the processing of readback waveforms to reproduce stored data, in conjunction with the traditional modulation coding method called run length-limited or (d,k) coding.

The purpose of this book is to explore and assess the successes and failure of Belgian planning and make this record available in English so that they may remain facets of Belgian planning. The general socio-economic and historical background is provided with a view to understanding the theoretical, legal, physical and selected topical aspects of Belgian planning. In doing so a multi-disciplinary approach has been taken and the authors have been selected from a variety of disciplines. This can be accomplished through a variety of programs and initiatives that reward innovation at all levels. The various activities that make this possible fall into two general categories: (1) the creation and maintenance of a legal environment that encourages private sector investment in innovation (patents and the relaxation of antitrust); and (2) the provision of incentives to overcome the natural inclination of private parties to consider only their private benefits when choosing the level of innovation in which to invest (governmental grants and contracts to targeted tax incentives). The role of government, more specifically, can be found in three key areas: (1) funding of research and development performed in the private sector; (2) funding of Federal laboratory research activities and the effective transfer of that knowledge to the private sector; and (3) encouraging the industry-university collaboration in research and development. It is these three areas of research that generate technologies fundamental to increasing the rate of technological development in the private sector, and it is these areas that are the focus of this book.

Neuware - Several years ago, we realized that the most prominent ideas that had been ex pressed about the origin and early evolution of the Metazoa seemed to have been developed chiefly by zoologists using evidence from modern species without reference to the fossil record. Paleontologists had, in fact, put… forth their own ideas but the zoological and the paleontological evidence were about the problem, seldom considered together, especially by zoologists. We believed that the paleon tological documentation of the first Metazoa was too scattered, too obscure to Western readers, and much of it too recent to have been readily available to our colleagues in zoology. Whether or not that was entirely true, we thought that a single volume reviewing the fossil record of the earliest Metazoa would be useful to many in both paleontology and zoology, especially since so much new informa tion has been developed in the last few years. Some of this information has been summarized in general articles recently, but an overview of most of the field does not exist. We therefore organized this book in five parts so that the evidence could be placed in perspective and summarized and inferences made from it. Part I intro duces the previous hypotheses that have been proposed for the origin and early radiation of Metazoa. Part II consists of two summary chapters that set the sedi mentological, geochemical, and biological background to the known radiations of Metazoa.

In choosing papers, the Program…Committee of the conference gave priority to studies in rapidly emerging areas of the growth and preparation of crystalS and crystalline films. The qualifications of the authors were also consid ered. This ensured that the material was of a high standard and that the problems discussed covered a wide range. These are the same criteria that, we hope, are typical of the volumes of this series. The articles of the present volume are divided into four sections: I. Processes on the growth surface. II. Molecular-beam epitaxy. III. Growth of crystals and films from solutions and fluxes. N. Growth of crystals from the melt. Following tradition, the series opens with three theoretical articles. These examine problems applicable to various crystallization media: instability of the crystallization front (for a more general case than before and for a comparatively complicated system, a solution), adsorption and migration of atoms and molecules (the analysis is made on a quantum-chemical level), and the kinetics of step and dislocation growth in the presence of surface anisotropy as well as impurity adsorption (several earlier known methods are summarized). The aim of the workshop was to evaluate current methods of code generation… and to indicate the main directions which future research is likely to take. It provided an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas and had the added advantage of bringing together European and American experts who were unlikely to meet at less specialised gatherings. This volume contains 14 of the 30 papers presented at the Dagstuhl workshop. The papers deal mainly with the following four topics: tools and techniques for code generation, code generation for parallel architectures, register allocation and phase ordering problems, and formal methods and validations. Most of the papers assess the progress of on-going research work, much of which is published here for the first time, while others provide a review of recently completed projects. The volume also contains summaries of two discussion groups which looked at code generation tools and parallel architectures. As a direct result of one of these discussions, a group of the participants have collaborated to make a pure BURS system available for public distribution. This system, named BURG, is currently being beta-tested. Code Generation - Concepts, Tools, Techniques provides a representative summary of state-of-the-art code generation techniques and an important assessment of possible future innovations.
