A workshop on 'neoplastic transformation in human cell systems in vitro: mechanisms of carcinogenesis' was held at the Georgetown University Medi…cal Center, Washington, DC, on April 25-26, 1991. The aims of the workshop were to present the state-of-the art in the transformation of human cells in culture, as well as to provide insight into the molecular and cellular changes involved in the conver sion of normal cells to a neoplastic state of growth. The following topics were closely related to the theme of the workshops: 1. Derivation of in vitro model systems (epithelial, fibroblastic, and hematopoietic). 2. Factors modulating cellular transformation. 3. Usefulness of defined in vitro model systems for viral, chemical, and radiation carcinogenesis. 4. Multistep nature of human cell carcinogenesis. 5. Role of activated and suppressor oncogenes in neoplastic trans formation. The workshop was organized by J. S. Rhim and A. Dritschilo (cochairmen), G. Jay, J. little, M. McCormick, R Tennant, and R R Weischelbaum. There were 32 speakers, 30 poster presentations, and about 190 participants.

It is as though the only criterion is to have appeared in a book or in the programme of a meeting or title we can find the expression ' . . . Cognitive Science' in whose name or something like that. Perhaps this situation is due to the (relative) youth of the field, which is seeking its own identity, still involved in a process of formation and consolidation within the scientific community; but there are actually deep disagreements about how a science of the mind should be worked out, including how to understand its own subject, that is, 'the mind. 'While for some the term makes reference to a set of phenomena impossible to grasp by any scientific approach, for others 'the mind' would be a sort of myth, and the mental terms await elimination by other more handy and empirically tractable terms.

However, as Rol and his colleagues explain, the power-handling capabilities ofoptical fibers limit many applications, particularly for short-duration, high-peak-power laser pulses.

Ullrich Trendelenb…urg was the head of the Department of Pharmacology at Wiirzburg University from 1968 till the end of March 1991. He is famous internationally for his contributions to the physiology and pharmacology of the autonomic nervous system, and his impact on pharmacology in general throughout the world has been outstanding. The various phases of his life and his career have been delineated recently by Youdim and Riederer (Journal of Neural Transmission; Suppl. 32, 1990). The articles included in this volume reflect a considerable range of current research work dealing with various aspects of neuropharmacology, i. e. , the field of research Ullrich Trendelenburg has influenced most. One or more authors of each chapter are either former or present students and coworkers or close friends of Ullrich Trendelenburg. The first section is devoted to the synthesis and metabolism of catecholamines as well as to the mechanisms by which amine transmitters are removed from the extracellular fluid; three chapters deal with the two types of extraneuronal uptake of catecholamines. As Professor Strat…hmann reveals, the market for process equipment built around membranes is now worth about $5x1(f annually, and it seemed important to review this technology, and to point the direction of future technical advances. All but the most critical reader should find some items of interest. The Committee would admit to not fulftlling all of thier aims, although those delegates who attended the meeting in Edinburgh judged it a success. In the event it provided representative examples of processes from the food and beverage industry, from water treatment, and from the chemical industry, of which the removal of alcohol from fermented beverages, shipboard desalination and solvent recovery are three. The major uses of charged membranes and sterile processes are not covered, nor 9 is the largest market, $1.2x10 annually, for artificial kidney dialysis. However, it is interesting to see artificial kidney now finding an alternative use as a reactor for the production of monoclonal antibodies. We are also reminded by Professor Michel of the importance and efficiency of natural membranes in the kidney under conditions where fouling is crucial to their performance and enhances their selectivity. 432 pp. Englisch.

The design methodpursued relies fundamentally on the structuring of systemsbased o…n the notion of data types. Depending on the level ofabstraction, data types are described in an object-orientedway by algebraic specifications or by machine-executableobject-oriented programs. The treatment involves two mainaspects. First, object-oriented programs have to be relatedby a notion of correctness that models the transition fromspecifications to program implementations. The authorpresents a notion of correctness which relies on the idea ofabstraction functions. Second, in order to obtain anintegrated design environment, a uniform structuring conceptfor object oriented programs and algebraic specificationshas to be provided. Inheritance, subtyping and clientshipare three central notions of object-oriented structuring.Theauthor uses them to develop the kernel of a typedobject- oriented programming language. The monographprovides the formal foundation for a unified framework ofalgebraic specifications and object-oriented programs. The aim of the workshop was to assess whether there was sufficient support in the Medical Informatics community in the EC to establish a concerted action. These presentations were centred around three themes: - Methods and Tools - Applications in the domains of chronic care and critical care - Evaluation of decision support systems The papers were prepared after the workshop and therefore we were able to include the relevant parts of the discussions which were related to the presentations. As a result of the discussions during the workshop, a proposal was prepared for the establishment of a concerted action, specifically addressing the development of guidelines for the evaluation of medical decision aids. This proposal was granted early 1990 under the same Medical and Health Research programme of the EC. Over 40 institutes are participating in this concerted action. It have been the outstanding presentations and the open discussions at the workshop that have been the starting point of this concerted action. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The last 30 years have seen a steady development in the range of ceramic materials with potential for high temperature engineering applications: in the 60s, self-bonded silicon carbide and reaction-bonded silicon nitride; in the 70s, impro…ved aluminas, sintered silicon carbide and silicon nitrides (including sialons); in the 80s, various toughened Zr0 materials, ceramic matrix composites reinforced with silicon 2 carbide continuous fibres or whiskers. Design methodologies were evolved in the 70s, incorporating the principles of fracture mechanics and the statistical variation and time dependence of strength. These have been used successfully to predict the engineering behaviour of ceramics in the lower range of temperature. In spite of the above, and the underlying thermodynamic arguments for operations at higher temperatures, there has been a disappointing uptake of these materials in industry for high temperature usc. Most of the successful applications are for low to moderate temperatures such as seals and bearings, and metal cutting and shaping. The reasons have been very well documented and include: - Poor predictability and reliability at high temperature. - High costs relative to competing materials. - Variable reproducibility of manufacturing processes. - Lack of sufficiently sensitive non-destructive techniques. With this as background, a Europhysics Industrial Workshop sponsored by the European Physical Society (EPS) was organised by the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation (ECN) and the Institute for Advanced Materials of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the EC, at Petten, North Holland, in April 1990 to consider the status of thermomechanical applications of engineering ceramics. 356 pp. Englisch.

Thecore of such economies and its relation with competitiveequilibria, both walrasian and monetary and the essentialcharacteristics of the overlapping generations model areexamined.The author defines the problem of trust in intertemporalconsumption allocations as a question of belonging or not tothe core of economy and provides a full characterization ofthe core allocations for n-goods pure exchange economieswith one agent per generation: a consumption allocationbelongs to the core if and only it is Pareto optimal andSequentially Individually Rational. From this it followsthat for one commodity economies no consumption allocationinvolving intertemporal transfers can belong to the core ofthe economy. In other words, no monetary equilibrium issocially viable. This result is no longer true for manygoods models. For that case it is demonstrated that thereexist bounds on the real value of equilibrium moneypurchases beyond which monetary equilibria are not sociallyviableand with many agents in every generation it is shownthat as the economy becomes large and monetary (as well asIOU) equilibria become eventually excluded from the core ofthe economy. The purpose of this book is to introduce the ecology of fishes by describing the inter-relationships between fishes and the aquatic habitats they occupy. The book can be read in complementary ways. A sequential reading, chapter by chapter, covers the main themes of ecology, including habitat use, species interactions, migration, feeding, population dynamics and reproduction in relation to the major habitats occupied by fishes. An alternative reading selects a particular sort of habitat, such as rivers, and, by using the index and skipping from chapter to chapter, builds up a picture of the ecology of fishes living in that habitat. The text is written for advanced students. Its emphasis is on descriptive rather than quantitative ecology. It is assumed that the reader will be familiar with the basic biology of fishes, acquired from a text such as The Biology of Fishes (Bone and Marshall, 1982) also published in the Tertiary Level Biology series.
