Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fair. First Edition. [British Rationalism] Small octavo, 15 cm. [16], 186, [6] pages. Lacking leaf a2. Modern brown cloth, red leather spine label. Rubbing, top margin shaved. Bookplate of Stoughton R. Vogel. Darkening to title page and rear page. Restored along gutter margins and corners of several pages. Wing C584, Houzeau & Lancaster 5103. In this work, George Carleton (An English Bishop) speaks out against astrology. Carleton's arguments are both rationalistic/scientific (from national philosophy) as well as religious (from Christian philosophy). An interesting early work opting for realism over astrological explanations of events proposed by Sir Christopher Heydon. Carleton discusses in the detail Aristotle's view. Carleton argues that Heydon's work "was more impressive for its learning than its logic." (ODNB).

Añadir al carritoSmall 8vo (142 x 94mm), pp. [xvi], 186, [5] contents; complete with the original initial blank; cut a little close at head, but otherwise in fine fresh condition; in contemporary English sheep (corners worn, rebacked). Second edition: first published in 1624, in an edition printed by William and Isaac Jaggard, at almost the same time as they were printing the First Folio of Shakespeare but in fact it had originally been written twenty years before that, as an attack on the book by Christopher Heydon (1603), and was resurrected by Carleton's chaplain, Thomas Vicars (1589-1638), who was also his son-in-law. Carleton's words were as true then as they are now, but no more likely to convert the gullible: 'The operation of the Sunne and Moone that are naturall, are confessed. The Husbandman can tell when it will bee day, as well as the Astrologer. The Husbandman and Fishers, by marking the course of the Moone, can foretell the full Sea and Ebbe, more exactly then any Astrologer: what then? Are these Astrologicall Predictions?' (p. 74). Thomas Vicars contributes an entertaining preface which gives a human and very convincing dimension to his lack of belief in astrology and divination. When he was a child in Carlisle, 'there came an odde fellow about the Countrey: He was reputed a Cunning-man, and so called, for that he tooke upon him to tel Fortunes': this 'Wizard' told the fortunes of Vicars and a schoolfellow, predicting that the schoolfellow would become a preacher and Vicars a scrivener. In the event, the precise opposite turned out to be true. 'By which it is plain to be seen, that either the Devill himself did misse, or his instrument was mistaken in his informations' (f. A6r-v). In 1650, the year before this new edition appeared, Nicholas Fiske had discovered a manuscript which Heydon had left unpublished, An astrological discourse with mathematical demonstrations (Wing H1663). It is difficult to believe that the resurrection of this text the following year was unconnected with that book. Provenance: early ownership inscription (offset on opposite blank A1v) of Ni. Saunderson. Wing C584.
