Hutton has included entries on D'Alembert, Copernicus, Newton, Lagrange, Napier, Fermat, Ferguson, Benjamin Franklin, Galileo, and many others, as well as extended descriptions of discoveries and inventions on balloons, guns, mathematical and scientific instruments, artillery, electrical machines, and more. Hutton (1737-1823) was a gifted mathematican who operated his own school of mathematics at Newcastle-on-Tyne by 1760, surveyed the city of Newcastle, and later published Principles of Bridges, Mathematical Tables, Course of Mathematics, Recreations in Mathematics, and more.
