Journaliste égyptien, spécialiste des questions militaires et des problèmes de défense et de l'armement. Il a publié un roman "Regard et larmes" (Éditions des Écrivains) en 1999. --- 2000 avant J.-C. le pharaon Sésostris III relie les lacs Amers au Nil, puis à la Méditerranée. Unissant celle-ci à la mer Rouge, l'isthme de Suez a toujours constitué - outre une voie d'eau internationale - un enjeu économique et stratégique mondial émaillé de sombres politiques. Abandonné, puis remis en état sous la période islamique, il s'ensable au VIIIe siècle de notre ère. Bonaparte, lors de sa campagne d'Égypte en 1801, suggère à nouveau une voie directe. Le projet tombe dans l'oubli. Sous Napoléon III, Ferdinand de Lesseps mènera à terme cet immense chantier malgré la ferme opposition de Londres et de Constantinople. L'inauguration a lieu le 17 novembre 1869. En 1882, le contrôle politique et militaire de l'Égypte permet aux Anglais d'occuper la zone du canal jusqu'en 1954. Abdel-Nasser nationalise la Compagnie française en 1956. Mais le canal reste naturellement une région conflictuelle pour les belligérants des guerres proche-orientales. Déjà fermé plusieurs semaines durant le Premier puis le Second conflit mondial, la "Bataille du Canal" ne s'arrête pas pour autant. Octobre 1956 : opération tripartite sur Port-Saïd. Juin 1967 : guerre des Six-Jours. Octobre 1973 : guerre du 10-Ramadan. Après les accords de paix égypto-israéliens de 1978, de titanesques travaux de nettoyage, d'approfondissement, d'élargissement et de modernisation de la voie d'eau permettront au canal de Suez d'accueillir tous les navires. Aujourd'hui, l'Égypte perçoit plus d'un milliard et demi de dollars de recettes par an. Le tonnage annuel est passé de 274 millions de tonnes en 1966 à 450 millions en 1996. Plus de 85 navires transitent en une seule journée. Depuis 1999, toute une infrastructure socio-économique a été recomposée sur ses rives de Suez à Port-Saïd. À l'aube du XXIe siècle, l'histoire de l'isthme de Suez se pérennise au-delà du passage millénaire. Comme le Nil, toujours alimenté, le canal offre une leçon de continuel recommencement. C'est la mission accomplie au fil du temps par Nékao II, Ibn-el-Khattab, Waghorn, De Lesseps et Abdel-Nasser.
