Taschenbuch. …

Taschenbuch.

It is now possible to analyze the history of the countries, here Lebanon and Switzerland, as well as the profound works of social scientists, which deliberated about the effective implementation of the consociational democracy. Now it is also possible to point out the mistakes of the French mandate in Lebanon, which led to the disastrous results and draw some ideas of how the state could develop if all the core principles of consociational democracy were completed in a right way. In this particular research, Switzerland represents this 'right way'. 16 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject History Europe - Other Countries - Modern Times, Absolutism, Industrialization, grade: ECTS 8, University of Groningen, course: M.A. 'Euroculture', language: English, abstract: This paper attempts to follow the cultural channels and actual steps taken by Peter the Great and his successors to cultivate Western European tastes in Russia and to direct the Russian Empire to a Western path of development. It investigates the historic role of St. Petersburg as Russia's 'window on Europe', and features the great masterworks of Western European art (namely, Dutch) assembled and prized in the Hermitage by the Romanov dynasty, by Peter the Great and by his spiritual follower and enlightener - Catherine the Great, in particular.Over the course of centuries, Russian tsars continuously borrowed ideas and concepts from their Western neighbors. St. Petersburg was to mark the way for Russia to become modern by creating an environment that could be maintained only by broader and deeper contact with the West. However, Peter Rietbergen in his essay on 'Russia between West and East' stresses 'the inherent duality in Russian culture, and in the national character, as half-Asian, half-European'. This issue is to be discussed and evaluated in the paper. A chronological overview of the main acquisitions of Dutch paintings to the Hermitage in the course of the XVIII century is included in the paper. It is hoped that the paper will add to the understanding of the described epoch of the Russian Empire and will expose the role it played in defining its path of historical development. The thesis statement investigated in the paper is as follows: 'Has the borrowing of cultural values from Western Europe contributed to the Europeanization of Russia in the XVIII century ' Under the term 'cultural values' artefacts, objects of art, enlightening ideas and books, as well as progressive reforms, European fashion and lifestyle, etc are implied. One of the aims of the research is to demonstrate that art which has been broadly studied from divergent viewpoints of style, content, iconography, philosophy, and the social sciences, can also be approached as a function of economic and socio-political motives. A method of comparative analysis of the Westernizing cultural policies by Peter I and later, by Catherine II is used. 16 pp. Englisch. …

(Gadzar 1993:161) This statement by Gerald Gadzar expresses the necessity to cope with the challenge of ambiguity resolution. As the phenomenon of ambiguity is widespread in human language, an interesting question would be: How could a machine be able to handle ambiguity while even humans have difficulties in solving such problems This paper will first define the phenomenon of ambiguity and explain the different types of it. An interesting aspect will be the effect of garden path sentences. 20 pp. Englisch. …

Kenneth Waltz, an Americanpolitical scientist judged the NATO in 1990 as a 'disappearing thing'and he forecasted, that it's only a question of time until this institutionwill become insignificant.1 The big common enemy was missing and theprobability of a new rising threat for western civilization was about zero. The need of article V, including its security guarantees seemed to beuseless and therewith the 'raison d'être' of the biggest multilateralintergovernmental security community was lost. Critics see the NATOas a relic from the Cold War and suspect the United States of Americato utilize this institution in order to enlarge and intensify their worldwidesphere of influence.2 The only fait accompli is the fact that NATO haschanged. To underline this statement General Secretary Robertson waswearing a t-shirt, with the slogan 'This ain't your daddy's NATO', at theNATO summit 2003 in Colorado Springs.3 The question accrues whatthe NATO exactly is in our days and if the changes made, since 1990are significant enough to guarantee the survival of the biggestmultilateral military alliance The following essay analyzes what theNATO is and investigates the different future scenarios of the NorthAtlantic Treaty Organization. 16 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Law - Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law, grade: 1,3, University of Bremen, language: English, abstract: Humanitarian law seems to become a more and more important topic in international law because of events like the war in Iraq and the increasing problems and differences between radical Islamic people and western states. There seems to be a change of attitudes as large parts of our society increasingly show that they are against wars, especially, when civilians and innocent people are wounded or even killed. The Martens clause could be an appropriate means to limit the force and brutality in wars and to remind states that they cannot do what they want and that there are principles, which must be respected, also concerning such situations. The emphasis of this paper lays on a legal examination of the clause and highlights its possible role as an independent source of international law. The author of this paper wants to explain today's meaning and scope of the Martens clause in humanitarian law and consequently its (possible) influence on the conduct of states. 16 pp. Englisch.…

The Russians were left 'feeling robbed of a sense of place, of purpose and of identity' . By the mid-1990's, Russia, while contending with the ups and downs of economic crisis and the health of its leaders, was trying to find its own course, attempting to resurrect past glories, learn from recent mistakes, and forge a place in a community of nations. Together with society, youth was going through a period of change in its ideological, economic and moral values. According to Martha Olcott, 'it was Russian youth, who seemed to suffer disproportionately from the numerous social disorders in the USSR at the end of the decade'. Ilynsky talks about the widespread moral decay in Russia in the 1990's and the lack of direction among many young people - 'their poor understanding of freedom, lack of faith in politicians, growing sense of injustice and general concerns about what the future might bring'. Russian identity is and has been a topic of continual argument, of conflicting claims, competing images, contradictory criteria. According to S. Franklin, 'Russia is continually represented as a question, a field of possibilities, a set of contradictions'. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 even more intensified self-questioning in the 'new' Russia started. Usually, such questions have been posed by the young population of Russia who happened to live in the period of global economic and ideological transitions. What kind of country is Russia to be What has happened to young people in the post-Communist phase The focus of this paper is how the changing economic, political and social geography of Russia affected the youth since the fall of communism in 1991. I will reflect upon the typical portrait and particular features of the post-Soviet youth. My research question is as follow: 'What images, sentiments, and obligations do young Russians attribute to their homeland, and how do these contribute to an understanding of their notions of ethnicity, patriotism, and nationalism ' 20 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Essay from the year 2005 in the subject Biology - Evolution, grade: A (very good), Umea University (Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences), course: Evolutionary Ecology, language: English, abstract: The Neanderthals lived in Europe and the Near East for at least 250,000 years and they outdared several climate changes. They were capable of surviving in a harsh, cold environment and were well adapted to it - cultural and morphological. Thus, the Neanderthals have been proven to be a successful human kind. But why then did they disappear so quickly and without a trace just between 40,000 and 28,000 yr BP (= years before present) [8] One possible answer is that modern humans starting to invade the Near East and Europe out of Africa 45,000 to 40,000 yr BP have outcompeted them, due to higher cultural and mental abilities, using the resources in a more efficient way than the Neanderthals. But is this really true Have modern humans really had higher abilities Did they admix with the local Neanderthal populations, integrating the native genes in their gene pool Or did modern humans not interbreed with them And - the big question: were Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans distinct species or just local variants of the same species To bring more light into this scenario, these questions will be answered in the following chapters using genetic, morphological and simulation-data that has been brought up by several researchers over the last years.Answering these fundamental questions also lies in the range of basic needs of human mind: we all want to know where we come from, who was our ancestor and who was it not. To realize which strange ways evolution sometimes takes and to determine what really happened is for sure an exciting thing, and that is exactly what researchers do when they trace human evolution back to the point when Neanderthals and modern humans met in Europe during the last ice age. Only one of them should survive this meeting, and to determine why and how this happened I will start with the description and comparison of the two main characters. 20 pp. Englisch. …

Shelley - these names represent, more than any other does, the Romantic Period in England. Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballads, the second version written in 1802, and Shelley's Defence of Poetry (1821) are two basic documents of Romantic thought and aesthetics. I will here endeavour to compare them, showing both the similarities and differences between the demands and beliefs of the authors. Preparing for my paper, I was surprised to find so little literature that concentrated on this special topic. Articles and books on the relationship between these poets concentrate on biographical aspects and general differences in thought, but do not trace into their theory of poems. Much attention is paid to the generation gap, as in the book of G. Kim Blank, and I learned that it is impossible to treat my topic adequately without taking this aspect into consideration. Therefore I will first give a survey of the times and circumstances the essays were written in, then compare them, trying to apply the facts of the first chapter where it is possible. 20 pp. Englisch.…

This was what Dada artists like Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven and other practitioners were aiming at. A well-remembered incident is the scandal that introduced the concept of Dadaism into American Art. Duchamp brought a urinal to the first exhibition of the Society of Independent artists on 10 April 1917. He did not change anything, but moved it from its original place, called it 'Fountain' and signed it with the pseudonym 'R. Mutt'. Only four days before the exhibition took place, president Woodrow Wilson had declared war on Germany. As Michael R. Taylor writes in his essay 'New York Dada', this event 'may have played a role in Duchamp's decision to enter his scandalous submission'. The New York Dada artists wanted to show their neglect of the cruel war in Europe and with their art challenged ideas about art which were commonly accepted. They produced 'paintings, mixed-media assemblages, sculptures, found objects, readymades, photography, and performances' (Taylor, 277). With the photomontage, the film or a photography the author of a work could not be guessed by looking at the work of art (Taylor, 277), the importance of the work was rather the message behind it. The message to a society which had absurd traditions, absurd machineries whith which people killed each other and a society that had cultural prejudices, which again were absurd. Having this common interest the New York Dada artists soon came together in the appartment of Louise and Walter Arensberg in 33 West 67th Street which served for their meetings from 1915 to 1921. 'It was while surrounded by this stunning array of paintings and sculpture that the group members hotly debated such topics as art, literature, sex, politics, and psychoanalysis, while others preferred to play chess, drink champagne, or dance the night away in their bare feet.' (Taylor, 278). 20 pp. Englisch.…

Rather than focusing on the change of the youth, in the latter story type the youth character is exposed to a confrontation with the adult world. In Oates's story this confrontation consists of the fact that the youth world (Connie) is getting overpowered by the adult world (Arnold Friend). At the beginning of the story, in the title, the reader is confronted with a twofold question pointing in two directions. 'The very title of the story calls attention to duality: a future (where are you going) and a past (where have you been).' Therefore, in this term paper the following thesis will be examined: 'The concept of duality is a basic feature of the 'coming-of-age' story.' It will be shown that in Oates's 'Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been ' one distinctive feature of creating the story type of the 'coming-of-age' story is the concept of duality. While following the twofold pattern of analyzing the representation of the youth world and the adult world, further major techniques of creating duality in Oates's story will be discovered, such as irony, ambiguity, grotesque, parody, allusions, deception, and allegory. 20 pp. Englisch. …

In the American English this word has one more meaning: in the past a frontier was the 'farthest part of a country to which settlement has spread, beyond which there is wild or unsettled land' (352). So the language of the frontier is first of all the language of people who settled at the western frontier of United States. The settlers were plain people, backwoodsmen, most of them were illiterate and spoke a simple, substandard English, often even dialects that originated from their old fatherland (Sorbonne). That all influenced of course the language as the whole. The language of the frontiersmen is well documented and can be an object of scientific studies thanks to tall tales, which were oral stories, before they were written down. So The Tall Tales of Davy Crockett can be a very rich source of examples of words and grammar rules used by people those days. It is also interesting to examine the characteristics of texts written in the beginnings of the 19th century. 16 pp. Englisch.…

After a theoretical introduction, I examine the arguments for and against the bilingual education by balancing previous research on this issue. Then I will analyze the problems in this field and the language legislation in the US. For a better understanding of the importance of bilingualism in the US, I will refer to the interest groups, the differences between the states, and to the issue of identity. To conclude, I will focus on English and Spanish as world languages and try an outlook on the future of the multicultural US. 20 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2.0, University of Education Ludwigsburg, language: English, abstract: I would like to base my essay on the protagonist Macbeth.Probably composed in late 1606 or early 1607, Macbeth is the last of Shakespeare's tragedies, the others being Hamlet, King Lear and Othello. If Hamlet is the grandest of Shakespeare's plays, Macbeth is from a tragic standpoint the most sublime and the most impressive as an active play.If we just consider the plot, Macbeth is a relatively simple play. In fact like Richard III and numerous pre-Shakespearean plays, it deals with a traditional form: the rise and fall of a great man.In the first part of the play we read about Macbeth's rise to power; then he manages to become king of Scotland. From this moment on he begins with a period of tyranny that will end with Macbeth's death and the accession to the throne of the legitimate king. For this reason he can be considered as the epitome of a tragic hero. In the course of the play we notice a great development of Macbeth's character. At the beginning he is a man much honoured by his countrymen for his leading and courageous part in defence of his good king and native land.During many conflicts he showed his great courage and he continues showing this personal quality also when he becomes king and he has to take a lot of difficult decisions. But this first description about Macbeth's character is not the definitive one: in fact as soon as we meet him, we find out also his negative qualities, for example that he is both ambitious and murderous. It happens when the two Scottish generals, Macbeth and his friend Banquo, returning victorious from the great battle against a rebel army assisted by the troops of Norway, meet three witches in the middle of the road. They begin to speak to Macbeth: the first of them greets him with the title of Thane of Glaning (so it is in the reality); the second follows by giving him the title of Thane of Cawdor, to which honour he has no pretensions; the third predicts that Macbeth will be king of Scotland. Then turning to Banquo, they prophesy that his son will be king of Scotland. So they turn into the air and vanish. After a while Macbeth and his friend are stopped by some messengers of the king, who are empowered by him to confer upon Macbeth the dignity of Thane of Cawdor: an event so miraculously corresponding with the predictions of the witches astonishes Macbeth, who begins to think about the other and more important prophecy. 16 pp. Englisch.…

A variety of astonishing ideas and concepts in terms of structure and content are present in the short story and raise questions on meaning, form or intention of the story. The predominant conventions of narrative order, closure and mimetic fidelity are questioned and challenged by an entirely new approach to storytelling in America. The following research paper will first try to raise awareness of the time and present some basic ideas of postmodernist literature. It will then pay closer attention to Barthelme's 'The Glass Mountain' and try to give answers to questions which presumably every reader will ask. The 4th chapter of this paper is dedicated to the role of symbols and the differences between the world as the reader sees it and the way the narrator perceives it. 16 pp. Englisch.…

Over the years the motivation for a pilgrimage on Mt. Fuji has changed dramatically. From exclusive religious intentions the mountain is open today to sport climbers and tourists as well. A comparison of articulatory abilities of two different periods shows the progress in childish first language acquisition concerning word utterances and pronunciation. What was once enforced became an important part of national identity and seemed also after the Cold War hindering an accession of Austria to the European Community. Over the past years Austria tried to adapt its principle of neutrality and thereby finally became a full member of the European Union 1995. However, the policy of neutrality is still on the agenda especially concerning the Constitution for Europe. The questions which will be addressed in that paper are: What is the meaning of Austria's policy of neutrality in general What did this implied for Austria's foreign policy and its relationship to European Community How comes, that this principle is still so important and how does Austria evaluate the Constitution for Europe in terms of neutrality 16 pp. Englisch. …

Public law governs the relationship between individuals and the states whereas private law regulates the relationship between individuals. When it comes to the laws ruling the aviation world, we also have to divide into these two parts: the public international air law represented in general by the Chicago Convention (formally 'The Convention on International Civil Aviation' done at Chicago on 7 December 1944) and on the other side the private international air law, mainly represented through the Montreal Convention (formally 'Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for the International Carriage by Air'). The latter represents the liability law in international air transport, regulating the relationship between an air carrier and its customer, passenger, consignor or cargo shipper. It is supposed to replace the Warsaw Convention of 1929 which sets compensation levels for victims of air accidents, as well as liability for damage, delay or loss of baggage and cargo. This paper describes first the historical way the Convention developed from Warsaw to Montreal and then goes into detail of the Montreal Convention with its achievements and deficiencies. By quoting from the original, it is written very close to the wording of the Convention, emphasizing the parallels and differences of the Warsaw and the Montreal Convention.Structuring:AbbreviationsIntroduction HistoryThe Warsaw SystemThe Montreal Convention 1999AchievementsDeficienciesConclusionLiteratureInternet-Sources 20 pp. Englisch. …
