Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. A copy of the first play by Anglo-Irish playwright, writer, and member of the House of Commons Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816). Sheridan also owned the Theatre-Royal on Drury Lane, and ultimately was the author of a number of well-received plays. The Rivals, which premiered in 1775, was Sheridan…'s first play. In its first showing at Covent Garden in London it was very poorly received, which led Sheridan to re-write it and re-stage it some days later. The re-written version was very successful, and established Sheridan's reputation and success as a playwright. This copy is bound in brown leather with a gilt boarder on the front cover and a gilt title and publication location and date on the spine. The author's name does not appear anywhere on the cover or on the title page. There are marbled pastedowns and the leather border visible around the edge has an embossed floral motif impressed in the leather. The most significant damage is to the bottom of the spine, where there is about half an inch of loss. There is some wear to the top and on the edges of the spine, as well as some minor bumping to the corners. There are bookplates from previous owners on the front pastedown and the front fly leaf. In addition a name and small note is written on an early blank page, matching the name on one of the bookplates. The front hinge is slightly cracked. There is some damage to pages 82-92 in the form of a blemish with small holes which damages some of the text, but nothing significant.

Añadir al carritoFirst edition. 79pp, [1]. With contents page printed at rear. Contemporary calf- backed marbled boards, contrasting gilt-tooled red morocco lettering- piece to spine. Rubbed and marked, with small losses to head and food of spine and surface wear to boards. Armorial bookplate of Sir George Cooke, Baronet, of Wheatley to FEP. Lea…ves lightly browned, light spotting to initial leaves. The sole edition, provincially published in Cork, Ireland, of the collected poetry of Thomas Gray (1716-1771) including his popular odes on 'A Distant Prospect of Eton College' and 'A Favourite Cat'. The book, intended to display a suitable example of the 'art of printing' to the Cork population, is dedicated to a 'Mrs. Elizabeth Gray' - of whom we could find no trace - who is described as a 'chief promoter' of the work, and includes John Duncombe's 'An evening contemplation in a college' (1753), a parody of Gray's 'Elegy in a Country Church Yard' (1751), which the editors hope is 'no unacceptable addition to this work'. ESTC T60059. Size: 8vo.

Jenkin and W. Spotswood. 1774. Viii, 575; 604 pgs. Frontispiece present to volume I. First Irish Edition/First Printing. Bound in fine polished brown lev…ant leather by the Riverside Press with gilt titles and raised bands present to the spine. Boards have light wear present to the extremities. Previous owner's bookplate present to the reverse of the FFEP of volume I. Name present to the title page of both volumes, small hole present to the title page of volume II. Text is free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Lord Chesterfield was an influential politician, diplomat and cabinet minister during the reigns of George I and II, and this book is a collection of letters of advice, counsel, and sometimes genuine wisdom, written by Chesterfield, over many years, to his son, Philip Stanhope, for whom Chesterfield had the highest hopes of success in the world. But ambitous men and women, actually working in the real world, will find so much here to consider and reflect upon, that it will take several close readings to absorb all that may apply to your career. That one's knowlege of the World must be learned by experience in the World, not in an ivory tower; that one's skills and virtues are of little practical value, unless carefully presented in a pleasing and artful Image; that multitasking destroys all hope of success; these are a few of the ideas which Chesterfield presents in elegant and polished prose. But Chesterfield's personal life, as it unfolds through his letters to its tragic and sorrowful conclusion, presents the most powerful lesson of all about ambition, life, and failure, for those readers who can read beyond what is merely written. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1179 pages.
