Armorial Bookplate of the Earls of Maccles…field [ South Library ] on the pastedown dated 1860, three blindstamped Macclesfield library stamps to the frontis, title & first leaf, leather a trifle rubbed & bumped with a circular dark mark to the lower board, but overall a fine copy. A devotional work, written anonymously like the earlier work alluded to in the title, 'The Duty of Man'. That work was attributed to Richard Allestree [ 1619 - 1681 ], the author of this new devotional is unknown, although John Entick [ 1703 - 1773 ] is likely to have had a hand in the authorship. 750 grams.

Engraved title-page to the second part. A good copy (apart from the title-page fault noted) in later full ecclesiastical black crushed morocco, backstrip bande…d and tooled in gilt and with a blind roll framing the front and rear covers, joints and corner tips slightly rubbed. No copies of an edition which concurs with that which we offer is recorded on ESTC. Later described as a Popish book and fitter for a sensual lover than a worshipper of the all pure and all-knowing God. These sentiments perhaps in some measure excited by the lists of duties of a wife to her husband: 'Hast thou spoken ill of him?' Hast thou given him cause of jealously, or been unfaithful to his bed?' While the husband is asked 'Art thou faithful to her bed?' and 'Hast thou been peremptory, rigorous, and magisterial in thy commands?'.

The volume collates: A2-A6, a-g2, B-4B6, 4C5 Lacks the portrait of the author (A1), but contains the portrait of Littleton and the folding table. Wing C4928 Bound in later 18th Century full calf. The boards gilt ruled with a gilt crest in the centre of each board. The boards with some warping. The spine in six gilt ruled compartments with five raised bands, with a red leather hand stamped lettering piece in the second compartment from the top. The binding good plus only. Both boards cracked badly and holding only by the cords. Any handling and the boards will be off. Internally with marbled endpapers but lacking the first blank which has been torn out. The contents generally fine with little in the way of stains, tears or foxing. Both the portrait of Littleton and the fold out plate in fine condition. The volume measures 32.5 x 21 x 6.5 cm. Each leaf measures 315 x 190 mm.

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL BINDING, VERY SCARCE THUS. Charles I was King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution in 1649. Charles was born into the House of Stuart, the second son of King James VI of Scotland, but after his father inherited the English throne in 1603, he moved to England, where he spent much of the rest of his life. He became heir apparent to the kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland in 1612 upon the death of his elder brother, Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales. After his accession in 1625, Charles quarreled with the English Parliament, which sought to curb his royal prerogative. He believed in the divine right of kings and was determined to govern according to his own conscience. Many of his subjects opposed his policies, in particular the levying of taxes without Parliamentary consent, and perceived his actions as those of a tyrannical absolute monarch. His religious policies, coupled with his marriage to a Roman Catholic, generated antipathy and mistrust from Reformed religious groups such as the English Puritans and Scottish Covenanters, who thought his views too Catholic. He supported high church Anglican ecclesiastics and failed to aid continental Protestant forces successfully during the Thirty Years' War. His attempts to force the Church of Scotland to adopt high Anglican practices led to the Bishops' Wars, strengthened the position of the English and Scottish parliaments, and helped precipitate his own downfall. From 1642, Charles fought the armies of the English and Scottish parliaments in the English Civil War. After his defeat in 1645 at the hands of the Parliamentarian New Model Army, he fled north from his base at Oxford. Charles surrendered to a Scottish force and, after lengthy negotiations between the English and Scottish parliaments, was handed over to the Long Parliament in London. Charles refused to accept his captors' demands for a constitutional monarchy, and temporarily escaped captivity in November 1647. Re-imprisoned on the Isle of Wight, he forged an alliance with Scotland, but by the end of 1648, the New Model Army had consolidated its control over England. Charles was tried, convicted, and executed for high treason in January 1649. The monarchy was abolished and the Commonwealth of England was established as a republic. The monarchy was restored in 1660, with Charles's son Charles II as king. Hamon L'Estrange (16051660) was an English writer on history, theology and liturgy, of Calvinist views, loyal both to Charles I and the Church of England. Along with Edward Stephens, he contributed to the seventeenth-century revival of interest in ancient liturgies. He was a member of the celebrated family of writers. On the outbreak of the First English Civil War he was a royalist, as were other family members. He was sent for as a delinquent for affronting the parliamentary committee of the county of Norfolk. With his father and brother he was embroiled in the attempted delivery of King's Lynn to the royal forces (August 1643); a little later he was ranked as colonel in the royal army. He speaks of having undergone an eight years' sequestration, apparently between 1643 and 1651. Writing to Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Manchester, 31 August 1644, he spoke of being reconciled to the sense of the parliament. From 1651 onwards he probably lived undisturbed and in comparative comfort at Ringstead, Norfolk and elsewhere. wiki.

Contemporary speckled calf, cove…rs elaborately paneled and decorated in blind, spine in six compartments divided by raised bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt. Title page stub-mounted with neat name in manuscript to top (John Bournes?). An excellent example in handsome period binding, securely bound and generally clean throughout. Wing L1189. Lowndes III, 1346 ("A book of considerable merit, written in a bad style."). A second enlarged and revised edition, in which L'Estrange answered the criticisms of Peter Heylyn, who had excoriated L'Estrange's history for its hasty composition and consequent omissions, misunderstandings, and errors, was published in 1656. L'Estrange was an English writer on history, theology, and liturgy. On the outbreak of the civil wars, he threw in his lot with the king, and was embroiled in the attempt to deliver the market town of King's Lynn, which supported the Parliamentarians, to Royalist forces. "In 1655 L'Estrange published The Reign of Charles I, a history of the reign to May 1641. Fuller described it as 'an handsome history likely to prove as acceptable to posterity as it hath done to the present age' (DNB). This has been claimed as one of the earliest attempts at impartiality in accounting for the tensions which led to the civil war in England. Certainly L'Estrange himself believed that he was setting the record straight by offering 'a modest vindication of this King in some particulars, not reflecting upon the fatall proceedings against him' (preface)."
