Neuware - As Gwendolyn stared at the line the reflection of her small face in the mirror grew suddenly all white as if some rude hand had reached out and brushed away the pink from cheeks and lips.Eleanor Gates was an American playwright who created seven plays that were staged on Broadway. Her best known work was the play The Poor Little Rich Girl, which was produced by her husband in 1913 and went on to be made as films for Mary Pickford in 1917 and for Shirley Temple in 1936.Excerpt from The Poor Little Rich GirlWhatever otherwise the pretty virtues of our Amer ican drama, the quality of fanciful imagination is of the catalogue no (or at best, small) part. We have seen amongst us farce writers of light and facile finger; we have seen drama framers of intermittently rugged, if consistently yoke], philosophic vision.Yet, the writer of exploring phantasies, the writer of caprices that violate the neutrality of the sacrosanct Broadway commonplace, is but dimly silhouetted against the borning native sun.

This book had tremendous and very visible influence on all the (now much more famous) authors that came after it. It is of course very dated. It does not match the standards that fantasy have created since; in neither scope, story, characterisation or complexity. On the other hand, it is a rather enjoyable little fairytale, and it does have its positive sides. Mostly, though, this book is not really one you read for fun. Except maybe if you're eight years old and have never read a fantasy book. If that is not the case, this book is more an object for study than a source of entertainment. It's a satisfying read because it gives an impression of what fantasy was like in the 1800s, but that unfortunately also means that it gives an impression of what fantasy was like before it got really good.

The Exercises in translation will, it is believed, furnish all the drill necessary to enable the student to retain the forms and constructions given in the various chapters. The Selections for Reading relate to the history and literature of King Alfred's day, and are sufficient to give the student a first-hand, though brief, acquaintance with the native style and idiom of Early West Saxon prose in its golden age. Most of the words and constructions contained in them will be already familiar to the student through their intentional employment in the Exercises. Advance sheets of the second part of this great work lead one to believe that when completed the three parts will constitute the most important contribution to the study of English syntax that has yet been made. Old English sentences have also been cited from Sweet's Anglo-Saxon Reader, Bright's Anglo-Saxon Reader, and Cook's First Book in Old English. The short chapter on the Order of Words has been condensed from my Order of Words in Anglo-Saxon Prose (Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, New Series, Vol. I, No. 2). Though assuming sole responsibility for everything contained in this book, I take pleasure in acknowledging the kind and efficient assistance that has been so generously given me in its preparation.

The author is but too sensible that they are imperfect in many features, both in matter and style. It is only in the hope that they will be of some benefit to the class to whom they are addressed, that he has consented to submit them to public perusal. He has aimed at nothing eccentric, odd, or far-fetched; but has sought to utter plain and obvious truths, in a plain and simple manner. There is no class more interesting, and none which has higher claims on the wisdom, experience, and advice, of mature minds, than the young who are about to enter upon the trying duties and responsibilities of active life. Whatever tends to instruct and enlighten them: to point out the temptations which will beset their pathway, and the dire evils which inevitably flow from a life of immorality; whatever will influence them to honesty, industry, sobriety, and religion, and lead them to the practice of these virtues, as "Golden Steps" by which they may ascend to Respectability, Usefulness, and Happiness, must be of benefit to the world. To aid in such a work, is the design of this volume. If it subserves this end-if it becomes instrumental in inciting the youthful to high and pure principles of action, in hedging up the way of sin, and opening the path of wisdom, to any-if it drops but a single good seed into the heart of each of its readers, and awakens the slightest aspiration to morality, usefulness, and religion-it will not have been prepared in vain. With a prayer to God that he would protect and bless the youth of our common country, and prepare them to preserve and perpetuate the priceless legacy of Freedom and Religion, which they will inherit from their fathers, this book is given to the world, to fulfil such a mission as Divine Wisdom shall direct.

Flora Annie Steel was a writer who lived in British India for 22 years. She was noted especially for books set in the Indian sub-continent or connected with it. Flora was interested in relating to all classes of Indian society. The birth of her daughter gave her a chance to interact with local women and learn their language. She encouraged the production of local handicrafts and collected folk-tales, a collection of which she published in 1894. In 1889 the family moved back to Britain, and she continued her writing there. Some of her best work, according to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, is contained in two collections of her short stories, From the Five Rivers and Tales of the Punjab. She also wrote a popular history of India. John F. Riddick describes Steel's The Hosts of the Lord as one of the "three significant works" produced by Anglo-Indian writers on Indian missionaries, along with The Old Missionary (1895) by William Wilson Hunter and Idolatry (1909) by Alice Perrin.

Zustand: Hervorragend | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was a German philosopher who is best known for his work in metaphysics and ethics. He was a prominent figure in the German philosophical tradition and had a significant influence on later philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. Here are some key aspects of Schopenhauer's philosophy: Metaphysics of the Will: One of Schopenhauer's central ideas is the concept of the "will." He argued that an underlying, blind, and irrational force, which he identified as the will to live, is the fundamental aspect of reality. This will is the driving force behind all phenomena in the world. Pessimism: Schopenhauer is often associated with a pessimistic view of existence. He believed that the will to live leads to suffering and that human desires and cravings are insatiable, causing perpetual dissatisfaction. He famously described life as a constant striving and the attainment of desires as temporary relief from suffering. The World as Representation: Schopenhauer distinguished between the "world as will" and the "world as representation." The world as representation is the world as it appears to us through our senses and conceptual understanding. He argued that our perceptions and experiences are shaped by the will and that the world we see is a product of this will. Aesthetic Experience: Schopenhauer had a deep appreciation for the arts, particularly music and visual arts. He believed that artistic experiences provide a temporary escape from the relentless striving of the will and offer a glimpse into a transcendent realm. Influence on Nietzsche: Schopenhauer's ideas, especially his emphasis on the will and his critique of traditional values, had a profound impact on Friedrich Nietzsche. While Nietzsche initially admired Schopenhauer, he later developed his own distinct philosophical stance, often critiquing aspects of Schopenhauer's pessimism. Ethics: Schopenhauer's ethical views were influenced by Eastern philosophies, particularly Hindu and Buddhist thought. He advocated for a form of compassion and self-denial as a means to alleviate suffering. Controversial Legacy: Schopenhauer's philosophy was not widely appreciated during his lifetime, but he gained posthumous recognition. While some appreciate his unique perspective and contributions to metaphysics, others criticize aspects of his pessimism and his sometimes cynical view of human nature. Schopenhauer's works, including "The World as Will and Representation," "On the Basis of Morality," and "Essays and Aphorisms," continue to be studied and discussed in contemporary philosophy. His ideas on the will, suffering, and the nature of reality remain subjects of interest and debate.
