Jean Mariotti (1901-1975) est fils d'un condamné au bagne. Enfant de la Brousse calédonienne, il subit la double influence des cultures européenne et océanienne. À 24 ans, il quitte la Nouvelle-Calédonie et s'installe à Paris. À la faveur d'un regain d'intérêt pour le roman colonial, il publie un premier roman fortement autobiographique " Tout est peut-être inutile". Sa connaissance de la colonie pénitentiaire lui inspire "Remords", alors que ses "Contes de Poindi" puisent leur origine dans les récits de la femme kanak qui l'a adopté à sa naissance. Jean Mariotti publie son livre majeur "A Bord de l'Incertaine", en 1942. Après la guerre il désire retourner en Nouvelle-Calédonie, mais après vingt-trois ans d'absence, son séjour le déçoit. De retour à Paris, il publie le dernier de ses contes "La Conquête du Séjour Paisible", puis un ultime roman "Daphné". En 1962, il est élu président de la Société des gens de lettres. Il travaille ensuite pour l'ORTF, anime des émissions littéraires et écrit des pièces radiophoniques. Il meurt à Paris en 1975 où il repose au Père-Lachaise.
