paperback. Condición: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

[Wanted Poster] WANTED FOR JAIL BREAKING. $25.00 Reward for Each. KARL KLEEMAN Alias Karl Wallmann BERNARD HOLTZ Alias Bernard Henry Fritz Glamann, also Glaumann
On the poster, beneath the Bertillon bone measurements, you will see a specific string of numbers and letters for each man: Kleeman: [5 R 10 / 17 R 11] 13 Holtz: [30 O / 22 II] This is the official Henry Fingerprint Classification System code. Invented in the late 1800s, this system translated the patterns of a person's loops, whorls, and arches into a mathematical formula. If another police station rolled their ink prints, they would get the exact same formula and immediately match the file. US prisons and major police forces began adopting fingerprinting between 1901 and 1903. By 1911, it was rapidly becoming the standard. Coincidentally, 1911 was the year of People v. Jennings in Illinois. This was the first time in . . .

C. in center on back of right hand, also Anchor above right thumb. Some time during the night of June 23rd, 1911, Kleeman and Holtz escaped from the Hudson County Penitentiary at Snake Hill, where they were serving a sentence for carrying burglar's tools. These men are Germans and have been in this country but a short while, each of them has a criminal record in Europe. If located, arrest and will send officers with necessary papers, forward all information to PATRICK HAYES, Jr., Chief of Police, Hoboken, N. J." They were re-apprehended within weeks of their escape. Given the Bertillon metrics and distinct scars/tattoos, hiding in early 20th-century urban communities was difficult once local precincts shared data. After their arrest for possession of burglar's tools - a common charge used at the time to lock up safe crackers and thieves before they could execute a heist they were sent to the infamous Hudson County Penitentiary at Snake Hill (Secaucus, NJ). Situated on a massive volcanic rock rising out of the Hackensack Meadowlands, Snake Hill was a grim, isolated institutional complex housing an almshouse, an asylum, and the penitentiary. It was considered secure due to the treacherous surrounding swamps. After their capture, they were returned to Hudson County to finish out their maximum sentences with additional time for escape. Both men traveled under multiple alias to throw off authorities across borders. Germany kept meticulous criminal registries and the U.S. police Knew Their Background thanks to the Bertillon System. When Kleeman and Holtz were arrested in New Jersey, the police measured their bodies and recorded their fingerprints. These exact physical dimensions were cross-referenced with international police circulars or shared directly with European agencies (often via letters and steamships). Because German police meticulously recorded Bertillon metrics for repeat offenders, New Jersey authorities were able to definitively match the physical profiles of "Kleeman" and "Holtz" to active criminal profiles filed under their aliases in Germany. They were part of a wave of professional European criminals who migrated to rapidly growing American cities like New York and Hoboken, wrongly assuming American police wouldn't be able to trace their overseas pasts. 1911 was the turning point when fingerprinting officially took over law enforcement in the United States. The Hoboken Police Department was operating during a major forensic transition. The poster itself captures a unique moment in history where police were using both systems simultaneously to double their chances of catching a fugitive. On the poster, beneath the Bertillon bone measurements, you will see a specific string of numbers and letters for each man: Kleeman: [5 R 10 / 17 R 11] 13. American history that a court legally accepted fingerprint evidence to convict someone of a crime (a murder case). (ilustrador).…
