Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Annotated. Cloth, dj. Minor shelf wear; light creasing to edges of jacket. Else fine. Internally a bright, clean copy. According to medieval physicians, lovesickness was an illness of mind and body caused by sexual desire and the sight of beauty. The notorious agony of an unhappy lover was treated as an ailment closely related to melancholia and potentially fatal if not treated. In Lovesickness in the Middle Ages, Mary F. Wack uses newly discovered texts and takes a fresh look at primary sources to offer the first comprehensive analysis of the forms and meanings of the lover's malady in medieval culture. She examines its importance in medieval literature and its role in the transformation of courtly love from literary convention to social practice. Drawing extensively from the Viaticum and its commentaries, studied for centuries in medical schools, Wack also addresses wider questions about the cultural construction of illness, the conflict between medicine and Church morality, the relations between lovesickness and gender, and the lover's malady as a form of behavior in late medieval society. The second part of the book contains annotated editions and translations of six important texts on lovesickness-the Viaticum and four commentaries on it. Forty-six black-and-white illustrations provide a striking visual perspective on medieval love and medicine. Lovesickness in the Middle Ages will interest literary scholars and students as well as historians of medicine, sexuality, psychology, and women's studies.…

Añadir al carritoSecond Egenolff edition in the original Latin, of a mediaeval collection of medicinal recipes intended, as the title "Treasury for the Poor" suggests, to provide readily available and inexpensive remedies to common ailments, probably for medical practitioners of modest means, students and (when they were at least able to read Latin) common people who might need to take care of their own ailments. One of the most important sources for Mediaeval pharmacology, it makes much use of animal parts and common plants and gives a very intimate picture of medical practices among the common people from Mediaeval times until far into the Renaissance. Beginning with a German edition of 1537, Christian Egenolff and his heirs were the leading publishers. As far as we know, their first Latin edition appeared in 1576 and this is their second.Owner's notations in ink in margins, some browning and thumbing throughout. Lacking leaf with colophon. Añadir al carritoFirst Latin Egenolff edition of a Medieval collection of medicinal recipes intended, as the title "Treasury for the Poor" suggests, to provide readily available and inexpensive remedies to common ailments, probably for medical practitioners of modest means, students and (when they were at least able to read Latin) common people who might need to take care of their own ailments. One of the most important sources for Medieval pharmacology, it makes much use of animal parts and common plants and gives a very intimate picture of medical practices among the common people from medieval times until far into the Renaissance. Many recipes are said to derive from Hippocrates, Galen and Avicenna, and an appendix presents the Hippocratic oath. It is widely believed that the oath was written by Hippocrates, himself, or by one of his students, to establish certain ethical standards. It was first printed in Salamanca ca. 1485, when it was attached to Juan de Pastrana's Compendium grammaticae, so that it was sometimes incorrectly attributed to him. From at least ca. 1492, it was attributed to "Piero Spano" or "Petrus Hispanicus" (Peter of Spain), which received various interpretations but is now generally believed to refer to the Portuguese Peter Juliani (ca. 1215-1277), better known from his 1276 election as Pope John XXI, as the present edition suggests. It went through dozens of editions in numerous languages before 1600, but declined in popularity in the course of the 17th century. Beginning with a German edition of 1537, Christian Egenolff and his heirs were the leading publishers. The book collates A-P8 = 120 ll., with only the colophon on P6, and with P7 and P8 blank. These three leaves are often lacking, but the present copy includes two of three (lacking the final blank). With the bookplate of J.B. Holzinger on the front pastedown. Bookblock detached from binding, and some leaves detached as well, lacking the final blank leaf. Browned and with some pencil annotations in the margins.l Durling 2595; Thorndike II, pp. 488-513; USTC 696943; VD16, J673; cf. Hagelin, Materia medica, p. 23 (1525 Lyon ed.).
