In this new and enlarged edition of his popular book, the author has added not only a number of new entries but also new information to existing entries. Nearly 3,600 counties, cities, mountains, and lakes are listed alphabetically, with such information as origin of name, date of founding and abandonment of towns, existence of a post office, changes of name, and other pertinent details. The story of its place names shows the entire panorama of Oklahoma history. The state has occupied a peculiar position as the converging point of many and varied civilizations, and its names are a reflection of the romance of its racial and pioneering past. The music of Spanish and the guttural of Indian tongues are to be found in close juxtaposition in the names of geographical features. French, English, and even Bohemian names produce a medley of nomenclature probably unequaled anywhere else in the University States. The author has drawn his materials from information supplied by historical archives, government records, and the recollections of private individuals, in addition to making use of Charles Gould's pioneering work on the subject, published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 1933 and long out of print. George H. Shirk, prominent attorney and former mayor of Oklahoma City, was president of the Oklahoma Historical Society. A well-known authority on Oklahoma history, he was the author of many articles published in The Chronicles of Oklahoma, the quarterly journal of the Society. Historian Muriel H. Wright, longtime editor of Chronicles of Oklahoma, has been recognized for her distinguished career by the University of Oklahoma and by other public and civic organizations.

Chester Whitney Wright (1879-1966) Was An American Economic Historian, And Professor At The University Of Chicago, Known For His Works On The Economic History Of The United States. Wright Studied At The Harvard University, Where He Obtained His Ab In 1901, His Am In 1902, And His Phd In 1906 Under Frank William Taussig. After Graduation In 1906 Wright Started His Academic Career At Cornell University. The Next Year In 1907 He Moved To The University Of Chicago To Become Assistant Professor Of Political Economy. He Became Associate Professor And Later Full Professor, And He Kept Teaching Until His Retirement In 1944. In His "Economic History Of The United States" Wright (1941 And 1949) He Offered A "Functional Approach To Economic History." He Explained: "The Approach To The Study Of Economic History That Dominates The Presentation Of The Subject In This Volume Is That Of The Economist Whose Immediate And Primary Function Is To Study The Production And Distribution Of Wealth With The Objective Of Learning How The Nation's Economic Progress Can Be Promoted And Its Standard Of Living Advanced. It Can Be Called The Functional Approach To Economic History. Although The Narrative Should Provide Such Knowledge Of The General Background Of Economic History As Is Needed For Most Purposes In The Interpretation Of Political History, And Has Frequently Been Turned Aside To Indicate The Reactions Thus Involved, This Has Been A Secondary Rather Than A Primary Consideration In The Selection And Organization Of The Material. Some Material Has Been Included Because It Served Certain Of The Other Objectives Mentioned In The Introductory Chapter, Though For The Most Part These Objectives Are Served Also By The Material Primarily Of Significance In Relation To The Major Objective. Wright Regarded As The Fundamental Problem" Of His Study, The Question Of "How The National Income Has Been Increased And Distributed." One Might Also Comment That By Assuming "Economic History" To Be The Events He Discusses, And Then Framing This "Economic History" As A Tool For Understanding Political History, He Ignores The Human Factors, Motivation And Effort And Competence Among Them, Which Determine Both Economic And Political History; He Educated A Generation Of Idiots Who Then Set The Standards For Rational Discourse About Both Economics And Political Economy.
