Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Good. Limited Edition. No. 70 of 100 copies. Original publisher's beige paper wrappers with staple binding. Front cover has two Abraham Lincoln postage stamps (green, 1-cent stamp and maroon, 3-cent stamp) tipped in with three postmarks in black ink ("New York, Feb. 27, 9:00 A.M., 1959, N. Y."; "The Cooper Union, 1859-1959"; and "First Day Issue"). 5" x 8 1/4." Unpaginated, four pages, complete. Pages are clean and intact overall but there is significant rusting from the staples (resemble dark scorch marks) and some dampstaining along gutters. Covers are clean and intact overall but staples have rusted, and there is dampstaining along spine and two small spots on front. A Good copy. This is a very brief, limited-edition reprint of an editorial article by Charles Allen Sumner (1835-1903), not to be confused with his famous contemporary, Charles Sumner (1811-1874). Charles Allen Sumner was an American lawyer and politician who served as a United States Representative from California from 1883-1885. Sumner was originally from Great Barrington, Massachusetts and moved to San Francisco, California in 1856. He became editor of the San Francisco Herald and Mirror in 1861. During the American Civil War, he was appointed as captain and assistant quartermaster of the U.S. Volunteers in 1862. In this reprint of his editorial article, which was originally published on March 4, 1862, Sumner assesses President Abraham Lincoln's first year in office. Sumner gives Lincoln a resounding commendation for his work as president. Sumner briefly gives background on the monumental task laid before Lincoln when he became president, ". he found, to meet his purposes, an empty treasury, a diminished and disorganized army, a navy too small and too widely scattered to be of any use in checking the rebellion, and a public service in which were so many traitors that it was next to an impossibility to distinguish friends from foes." While Sumner does not provide in-depth details as to Lincoln's accomplishments in his first year as president, Sumner implies that Lincoln overcame the aforementioned obstacles and that his aptitude as president is clear. Front colophon: "This edition is limited to 100 copies, of which this is No. 70.".…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 208, xx, [1] ; illustrated, 4 in color ; 21 cm. ; John Horace McFarland (1859-1948) was an American master printer and horticulturist. Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. His wide-ranging achievements made a lasting impact on printing processes, horticulture, and environmental protection. During McFarland's early years, his father operated a nursery and a small weekly newspaper in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. McFarland worked in both of his father's businesses as a youth. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society.
