Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into three expeditions undertaken early in the 18th century in the Polar Ocean and along the northern coast of Siberia. Led by M. von Wrangell, these expeditions sought to survey uncharted territories and discover a potential passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The author provides a historical overview of previous expeditions in the region, highlighting the inaccuracies and gaps in knowledge that motivated von Wrangell's endeavors. The book offers a detailed account of the challenges faced by the explorers, including encounters with ice floes, storms, and the harsh Arctic climate. Beyond the gripping narrative, the book explores the scientific and geographical significance of the expeditions. Von Wrangell's precise observations and detailed maps contributed to a more accurate understanding of the Arctic landscape and its environmental conditions. The book also sheds light on the cultural interactions between the explorers and the indigenous populations they encountered, providing valuable insights into their traditions and way of life. Ultimately, this book unveils the complexities and wonders of the Arctic region, showcasing the intrepid spirit of exploration and the quest for knowledge that drove these early expeditions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. His return to the Arctic, under William Parry in 1819-20, compounded a keen interest in geomagnetism and his publications earned him the Copley Medal of the Royal Society (whose presidency he would later hold). His experience and expertise made him a natural editor, therefore, of this Arctic narrative, translated into English from German by his wife, Elizabeth Juliana Leeves (1807-79), and published in 1840. It is the account by Ferdinand von Wrangell (1797-1870), a Russian explorer of Baltic German ancestry, regarding his expedition to survey Siberia's north-eastern coastline. Compiled from the notes of the scientists on board, this work offers a valuable and wide-ranging insight into an inaccessible and little-known portion of the globe. …
