Contemporary green cloth boards rubbed with slender wear at edges particularly at bumped corners; front board and its adjoining ffly…and title leaf only tenuously attached (but rear board firm); spine cloth lacking with underlying paper back-strip exposed lengthwise with quires visible at ends. Front free endpaper removed; modest personal hand-numbered bookplate of Tuscaloosa, Alabama banker James H. Fitts (James Harris Fitts, 1830-1912) on front pastedown; foxing/toning strongest on several early and late leaves with mostly light to mild interior occurrences with some stains and soiling; upper fore-edge chips to pages 493-495 but not affecting text. Text block remains firm. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the aforementioned tenuous front board and modestly enhances the book's compromised shelf presence. Stray volume of the first posthumously gathered collection of Edgar Allan Poe's work with poems on pages 7-214 (leading off with "The Raven," and "Lenore" and concluding with "Eureka: A Prose Poem") and miscellaneous writings on pages 215-495. Attesting to early printing (second?) status is that "choir" appears with correct spelling on page 46. Needs to be re-backed and restitched and thus sold as is.

He also worked as an editor, working with various eminent American figures of the day, including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. During his career, he was the highest paid magazine writer.Two pages of adverts to the rear. Rebound in a cloth binding, with the original wraps bound in. This volume contains complete sections from different editi…ons, but there is no publication information in any of the text material. There are 21 total stand-alone sections mostly of either 16 or 32 pages in length. The focus of nearly all "articles" centers on poetry and song/ballad lyrics: Irish Melodies, Lall Rookh, Gems of Scottish Song, Sacred Poems of Mrs. Hemans, Songs of Hebrew Melodies, Evenings in Greece, and more. One section, pp. 1-32, is followed by an "extra", continuous section, pp. 33-48, but it is from the New Mirror. The final three sections are Pencillings By the Way: Written During Some Years of Residence and Travel - Franch, Italy, Greece, Asia Minor, Turkey, and England (N.P. Willis, viii + 216 pp., the first complete edition), all narrative letters; Letters from Under a Bridge, also by Willis (32 pp.); Lecture on Fashion (Willis, 16 pp. - a lecture delivered to the New York Lyceum); and The Epicurean: A Tale (32. pp). Customary reading for the era. Wonderful condition. VG, clean and bright interior but with inscription in pencil. Covers wearing at edges and spine edges. Binding tight. In 1835, Bartlet…t first visited the United States in order to draw the buildings, towns and scenery of the northeastern states. The finely detailed steel engravings Bartlett produced were published uncolored with a text by Nathaniel Parker Willis as American Scenery; or Land, Lake, and River: Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature. American Scenery was published by George Virtue in London in 30 monthly installments from 1837 to 1839.
