Biography of Thomas Jefferson by John Sharp Williams (1854-1932), an American politician. He served as a United States Representative from Mississippi from 1893-1909, House Minority Leader from 1903-1909, and a U.S. Senator from Mississippi from 1911-1923. He was a Democrat and later became a close political ally of Woodrow Wilson. In this biography, Williams discusses and examines the life and career of Jefferson, Jefferson's politics and principles, and his influence on American institutions. Contents are titled as follows: "Introductory," "Jefferson the Revolutionist: In America; In France," "Jefferson the Democratizer of State Institutions: A State Made Over; An Apostle of Local Self-Government," "Jefferson's Influence as a Diplomat," "Jefferson the Democratizer of Federal Institutions: Stemming the Counter-Revolution," "The Influence of Jefferson as President: 'My Passion is Peace'; 'An Empire for Liberty'; Jeffersonian Simplicity; Some Minor Matters; Summing up," "Jefferson's Influence on Freedom of Religion in America," and "Jefferson's Influence on Our Educational Institutions.".

Obtrusive library black cloth tape overlaid upon spine and board corners with original brown cloth heavily rubbed; handwritten si…lver ink lettering upon spine's black tape with shelf notation and some residue from removed library sticker near heel; front board's gilt lettering partially covered by aforementioned tape with visible remainder flaked or rubbed. Library stamps and marks on front endpapers; bar code sticker, stamps, and pencil and ink notations on title page. No other library markings readily apparent upon a quick perusal. Lacking pages 1-2 which is Chapter 1's title page with no significant text. Occasional edge tears and a few scattered pencil and ink markings to interior leaves; top corner loss (not affecting text) to pages 9-10. All eight b/w plates (including frontispiece which retains its tissue guard) present but with three bound-in at different places than specified on "Illustrations" list on page vii; two plates have strips of clear tissue paper adhered lengthwise along their fore-edges. Binding remains firm. An unattractive but serviceable reading copy of an uncommon biography of Mississippi Democrat politician John Sharp Williams (1854-1932) who served eight terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1893 to 1909 and two terms in the U.S. Senate from 1911 to 1923. A resident of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Harris Dickson (1868-1946) was a local judge, historian, and fairly prolific author whose best known book may be THE STORY OF KING COTTON published in New York in 1937. {MS-Shelf-#3}.

Else a very good copy. Uncommon novel by Alabama novelist and longtime (35 years) Director of the Alabama Department of Archives and History. YVONNE OF BRAITHWAITE was also issued by L.C. Page & Company in blue cloth as opposed to this copy's gray cloth; a search of sources does not reveal which cloth binding has priority.
