Añadir al carritoThis is a two-volume copy of The Pirate by the great Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott (1770-1832). It is the 14th of his Waverley novels which, for nearly a century, were the most-read novels in Europe. The Pirate was first published in 1822. It surrounds the life of the Scottish pirate John Gow, who was executed for his many…crimes in 1725. These books are part of an incomplete set I have, which is also listed here. Between 1892 and 1894, the Boston publisher Estes and Lauriat published the collected Waverley novels. In 48 volumes, they published a leather set, a marbled-cover set and a plain set. I have volumes of the plain set. By 'plain', I mean attractive navy blue boards with ivory title plates on the spine. The publisher has stated 'Large Paper'; the paper is thick and of best quality. There were 1000 copies of this set printed. This is set #679. That is stamped on each book in red. There is red type on the title page and on the tissue paper fronting each illustration. Each book has six black and white illustrations. The illustrations in these two books are covered with tissue paper. They are stated as original etchings by Henry Robertson (English 1839-1921), Charles Holmes (English 1868-1936), Henry William Batley (English 1837-1907), Henry Macbeth-Raeburn (Scottish 1860-1947), Herbert Dicksee (English 1862-1942), William Strang (Scottish 1859-1921), and Francis Walker (Irish 1848-1916). In both cases, the title panels are faded and scratched. Volume II has minor spots on covers. Volume I's covers are perfect. Both books have fully-intact gold trim; only the tops of the pages were originally trimmed. In the case of both books, the interiors are perfect. No foxing. They have definitely not been read, or possibly even opened. Henry William Batley, Henry Robertson, Charles Holmes, Henry Macbeth-Raeburn, Herbert Dicksee, William Strang, Francis Walker (ilustrador).

Añadir al carritoArt, Prints & Posters. Condición: Very Good. Original Harper's Weekly Engraving satirizing President Taft. June 13, 1908, p. 3. Mounted, under glass, in wooden frame. " Published on the eve of the Republican National Convention, this Harperâs Weekly cartoon pokes fun at the girth of William Howard Taft, the soon-to-be presidenti…al nominee of the GOP. Uncle Sam is amused to see the rotund candidate, whose weight fluctuated around 300 pounds, try unsuccessfully to fit into President Theodore Rooseveltâs Rough-Rider uniform. Beneath the mirth, however, is a serious criticism that Taft was slavishly mimicking Rooseveltâs political positions in order to gain the Republican nomination and the presidency. In 1904, Taft had resigned as governor-general of the Philippines in order to become Rooseveltâs new secretary of war. In that office, Taftâs public pronouncements increasingly aligned with those of the presidentâs. Whereas he had long opposed American intervention in Latin America, Taft endorsed the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine and administered the construction of the Panama Canal. When he campaigned for Republicans during the 1906 congressional elections, he enthusiastically endorsed federal legislation backed by Roosevelt, such as the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act.In response to criticism that he had shifted his opinions for political advancement, Taft stated in late 1907 that he took the presidentâs side on issues because their political principles and goals were in harmony. âIs it possible that a man shows lack of originality, shows slaving imitation, because he happens to concur in the views of another who has the power to enforce those views: Mr. Rooseveltâs views were mine long before I knew Mr. Roosevelt at all. â¦I am not to be driven from adherence to those views.â The president also believed that their thinking harmonized, and for the secretaryâs loyalty and administrative talent, Roosevelt endorsed Taft as the best man to continue the policies of his administration. Note in the cartoon that the candidate has Rooseveltâs âMy Policiesâ in his pocket. With the presidentâs strong public support and behind-the-scenes maneuvering, Taft secured the nomination before the Republican Convention met in mid-June. Following Taftâs victory in the general election that November, Roosevelt wrote to British historian George Trevelyan, âTaft will carry on the work substantially as I have carried it on. His policies, principles, purposes and ideals are the same as mineâ¦â By 1910, the former president had changed his mind. Although Taft was by inclination more conservative than his predecessor, Roosevelt had moved further to the left over his political career. In 1912, he challenged Taft for the Republican nomination and, after losing at the convention, as an independent candidate. The split in the Republican Party allowed Democrat Woodrow Wilson to win the White House." - From HarpWeek.
