Añadir al carritoWilliam Dickes Ilustrador. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good/Near Fine. Published by The Religious Tract Company [1857]. Undated however research indicates 1857. 282 pages + list of engravings + Publications of the Religious Tract Society. Publishers original blue cloth binding; with embossed decoration and gilt bird images to front, gilt lettering and bird images to spine, with embossed decoration to rear board. Slight cracking to spine of pastedown - no loose pages. Yellow pastedown and FEPs, some spotting and small ink mark (old price) to FFEP. Rear pastedown has small bookseller sticker to bottom left. Contains publishers errata slip laid in. Bizarrely there is an error that the publisher does not list on the errata: The illustration listed as page 263 in the index (namely the Partridge, The Quail and The Bustard) actually appears on page 265. Illustrated throughout with black and white etchings by William Dickes [1815-1892]. Dickes was an English illustrator, engraver, printmaker and lithographer. Dickes worked as apprentice to the wood engraver Robert Edward Branston, Allen Robert Branston's son, in about 1831. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools in 1835 and displayed examples of oil-colour printing at the Great Exhibition. In the publisher's decorative cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Minor bumping to the extremities and slightly bent corners. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clear. An extremely scarce work, usually only found in Legal Deposit institutions and Museums. A fantastic work, which acts as a primer to many birds in Britain. Including Thrushes, Shrieks, and Poultry. A charming and informative work. Additional photographs available upon request. For shipping heavier items, or delivery outside the UK, please read our shipping terms for further details.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. First Edition. Addressing his book to the Trustees of the National Gallery, Dickes sought to establish that the enigmatic painting was a memorial to the Treaty of Nuremberg of 1532 and of the of the two Palatine brother Counts, Otto Henry and Philipp. Although not accepted by art historians, the similarity of other portraits of the counts with the faces in the Holbein, and Dickes analysis of the complex and deliberate iconography of the painting, is intriguing. 36 b&w illustrations. 4pp ads at rear. Green cloth, rather darkened, with skull detail from the painting in silver on front board. Gilt edges. Some inkstains on rear board and cloth puckered along bottom edge. 1.5cm loss at the foot of the spine around the rear joint. Decorated endpapers, the front free endpaper being almost detached and with a small closed tear. Ow very good.
