Dezember 1822 in Neuruppin; 23. August 1890 in Berlin); erste Orientreise unternahm er 1847, weitere folgten; seine Bilder des orientalischen Lebens waren ein großer Erfolg. Zwischen 1874 und 1890 war Gentz Mitglied der Königlichen Akademie der Künste in Berlin. 1881 wurde er von Kaiser Wilhelm I. zum Professor ernannt. Gentz galt als Kolorist ersten Ranges, der namentlich die Wirkungen des Sonnenlichts mit großer Meisterschaft darzustellen wusste.
