Hand-signed in blue ink by Brander Matthews at the conclusion of his introductory essay, Biographical Criticism. Matthews (1852-1929), the noted literary critic and Columbia University professor, was a contemporary and friend of Twain. Octavo (8vo), 377; 446 pp. Contemporary full black morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt with decoration echoing the Tiffany & Co.-designed title-page ornament; raised bands, gilt titles and numbering to spines, gilt top edges, deckled fore and lower edges, gilt dentelles, and marbled endpapers. Illustrated with photogravure frontispieces and plates by W. H. W. Bicknell and Peter Newell. The 1899 Uniform Edition recast Twain's first great travel book into two volumes and introduced the work with Matthews's Biographical Criticism followed by Twain's own Preface to the Uniform Edition. Originally drawn from Twain's 1867 voyage aboard the Quaker City through Europe and the Holy Land, The Innocents Abroad combines travel narrative, satire, and irreverent observations of Old World culture, helping establish Twain's national reputation. New illustrations were commissioned for this edition, including six full-page illustrations by Peter Newell. Contents generally clean and unmarked, with light offsetting from several plates; both volumes complete, with the illustrations present. Text blocks generally sound. Inner hinges cracked, one substantially with the binding fabric exposed; boards remain attached but are weakened. Front free endpaper of Volume II adhered to the front pastedown near the gutter. Bindings heavily worn, with substantial chipping and loss of leather at the spine ends, corners, and outer joints, exposing the underlying binding material in places. Gilt tooling remains attractive.
