Añadir al carritoFirst edition of this history of the earliest European expansion in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean during the sixteenth century, with extensive marginal comments, addenda and corrections made by the author throughout, and a quantity of loose notes and correspondence inserted at the rear, concerning sources which had eluded him in the first edition. A rare work focused on connections between the Middle East and India, here much enhanced. Whiteway's book begins with the medieval oceanic networks used by Muslims, discussing the shipping routes along which Arab traders travelled between Calicut, on India's Southwest coast, Jeddah, Cairo and Suez. He also mentions medieval Indian travellers to the Middle East, like the 9th-century ruler of Malabar who converted to Islam and died in Arabia. His main focus lies on the activities of the most prominent Portuguese commanders, including Francisco d'Almeida and Afonso d'Albuquerque, but he also surveys less renowned figures, like Duarte de Lemos, who "remained within his own limits off Arabia, where there was no shelter, and nothing to do except be a pirate" (p. 132). Encounters between the Portuguese and the Islamic powers come to the fore: the author describes how, "when Lopo Suares was at Jedda in 1517, the Turks had a 'basilisk' that was said to throw a shot of three quarters of a cwt.; it was fired from a galley at a Portuguese ship close by, and the recoil was so great that the former showed her keel" (p. 40). The notes inserted loose in the volume contain passages drawn from historians and travellers who came to the author's attention in the first and second decades of the 20th century, including Francisco de Távora (d. 1710), Fra Paolino da San Bartolomeo, who travelled to India between 1776 and 1789, and James Bird's translation of a Persian statistical history of Gujarat. The materials also include an extract from Abu Turab's Persian History of Gujarat, translated in the hand of the orientalist Henry Beveridge (d. 1929), with his covering note; a letter from Edgar Prestage (d. 1951), professor of Portuguese at King's College, London; and two letters from G. F. Barwick, keeper of printed books at the British Museum Richard Stephen Whiteway was educated at King's College, London, and became a member of the Bengal Civil Service from 1868, when he was appointed assistant magistrate and collector of Moradabad, N.W. Province. He was a close friend of the Arabist Charles Lyall. In addition to the present volume and administrative reports, he also published a book on the Portuguese expedition to Abyssinia of 1541. His signature is found on the flyleaf of this volume. Octavo. With folding coloured map at rear, 22 leaves of varying sizes in differing hands inserted loose in the vol. Original light brown combed cloth, spine lettered in gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut. Sunned at spine, boards rubbed and spotted with slight cockling, rear inner hinge split, some foxing and browning to end leaves. Very good.
