REMINISCENCES OF BIG I was first published serially from April to December 1895 in the Charlottesville [Virginia] Progress with the first book format being a limited edition of 200 copies published by Charlottesville's The Michie Company in 1909. Alan Nevins bibliography "Civil War Books" summarizes Wood's account as a "direct and poignant recollection of a yeoman who worked up through the ranks and became an officer in the 19th Virginia." William Nathaniel Wood began his Confederate service as a private in Company A of the Nineteenth Virginia Infantry, aka the Monticello Guard, but, was soon promoted to lieutenant after First Manassas and commanded the company at Antietam and again at the Battle of Gettysburg upon the wounding of Captain John C. Culin during the ill-fated Pickett's Charge.
