Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flyi…ng crescents which "skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. 12mo, illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 98 pp. A much better than Very Good example, approaching Near Fine copy but for an small-scale top edge and a lightly touched lower right corner (see scans). As always in 50s pulps, some modest age-toning to the newsprint paper pages, which remain fully supple. See scans. High grade condition for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. See scans. Cover has the look of a J. Allen St. John work, but is in fact uncredited. See the scanned image of the contents page for the articles herein, which cover such topics as Hypnotism, Possessed Theater Jacket, Bleeding Sugar Cane, Oliver Lerch, Phantom Billiard Player, Hex, Bleeding Saint, Pan, Spirit Sculpting, Black Magic, Lincoln Prophecies, Flyings Saucers, Midget Mummy (a piece by founder Ray Palmer on a 14" tall adult mummy, Interplanetary Man, and of course much, much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves, all on various other paranormal or inexplicable phenomena. Interior art and photography is largely uncredited. A piece of paranormal history, and an example of a unique branch of Americana, in very highly collectible condition. A very rare issue. This set consists of: King of the Air, Or, To Morocco on an Airship by Herbert Strang (1908). This is a first edition. This copy is illustrated in colour by W. E. Webster. Sadly the final colour plate and frontispiece are missing from this copy, all other colour plates are present. "Herbert Strang" was a joint pseudonym used by George Herbert Ely (18661958) and Charles James L"Estrange (18671947). Previous bookseller"s blind stamp to front free endpaper. Front board and spine of "King of the Air," disbound, holding at rear joint, with slight cracking to upper extremities of joint. Prize plate to front paste down of "The Romance of the King"s Navy" from Woodhouse Sunday School, presented to Charles Flanders, 1913. Previous owner"s pencil inscription to front free endpaper of "Bridget", partially rubbed out. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges slightly strained in places, but holding firm. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few leaves and the odd handling mark to fore edges. Toning to interior, light soiling and tiny faint stains in a few places, owner signature of J.H. Anthon dated 1858 to front endleaf and title page along with owner signature of J.B. Coppinger, pencil underling and brief annotations to several leaves (annotations between pp. 469-498). $85. * First edition. As McDade notes, "The murder in the Harvard Medical School of Dr. George Parkman, a prominent Bostonian and Harvard Alumnus, by Professor John W. Webster was, in the words of Edmund Pearson, 'America's classic murder.'" The present account is "the basic book on the case and contains all the evidence." A two-volume edition appeared the same year and the work was reprinted in 1879. The J.H. Anthon who owned this copy was likely John Hone Anthon [1832-1874], a New York attorney and the son of John Anthon, an important American jurist and a founder of the New York Law Institute. J.B. Coppinger may have been John B. Coppinger, a first lieutenant and adjutant in the 83d New York Infantry during the Civil War. The pencil annotations, which provide brief but often lively commentary, do not appear to be in either's hand. McDade, The Annals of Murder 1060.

It seemed Webster owed Parkman money, and after Parkman threatened Webster with loss of his position, Webster killed Parkman, and began a gruesome process of disposing of the evidence.
