Ware Ilustrador. 8pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 7 drawings, salvaged from a damaged copy of The Century Magazine, Volume XXIII, No. 5, March, 1882. From the opening paragraph, "It has been generally supposed that, aside from the custom of plural marriage prevailing among the Mormons, there was little to distinguish them from other religious communities. It is quite as generally believed that if means could be derived to suppress the practice of polygamy in Utah, no other evil of such magnitude as to require special attention from Congress or the people of the United States would remain to be corrected. A very cursory examination of tye Mormon system will show that polygamy is only one of a series of evils, attracting attention by its prominence rather than its preeminence over its fellows." Housed in protective mylar report cover.

Ten original b/w press photos by 3 different publishers, varying sizes, generally good or better, with printed caption labels and ink stamps to the back, the Daily Telegraph ones dusted with crop marks to the fronts. The Government of British India raised the APL from local tribes in 1928 to protect RAF bases, support the police, and latterly to defend the frontier with Yemen from up country or forward bases including at Mukeiras, with support from friendly tribes. The War Office took control in 1957, replacing RAF with British Army officers. In 1961 with the formation of the Federal State of South Arabia, APL became the Federal Regular Army. This set dates to their final years defending the frontier in response to a series of post-Suez tribal revolts incited by the Yemeni King Ahmad bin Yahya (1956-60). (1-2) United Press "Arabian Sights" nos. 6 and 7 (of 10), 3 Feb 1956, 26x21cm. No. 6 shows a line of APL Camel Corps standing by their resting camels: "They are fast and they are fierce as desert warriors have to be". No. 7 a bristling line of armed tribesmen along the ramparts of Merta'a Fort at Mukeiras, 2 miles from the frontier. // (3-6) Keystone CW/13784 nos. 2, 9, 12, 18, undated but the same period, 26x21cm. "CW" is possibly Chris Ware. No. 2 shows Levies being training in the Aden barracks before being posted to the frontier: "They make excellent soldiers". No. 9 an aerial view of the APL manned frontier fort at Mukeiras. No. 12 "A typical member of the force". No. 18 a line of 6 tough looking "Tribal warriors, in government pay" passing under the wing of a RAF Valetta supply plane on the frontier. // (7) Keystone CW/696811, 2 Dec 1958, 16x21cm. Colonel DW Lister during his final inspection of the APL before relinquishing command to Lt-Col HRD Oldman. // (8-9) Daily Telegraph, 17 Mar 1960, 25x20cm. One shows Levies concealing themselves behind rocks on the frontier. The other shows the market square at Mukeiras crowded with Audhali and Yemeni tribespeople, an arrow in the print picking out the British Defence Minister, Harold Watkinson, during his tour of the frontier. // (10) United Press London Bureau LN288986, 8 Sep 1960, credited to Charles Dawson, 23x18cm. A fine image of the APL Camel Corps on parade at Aden.
