Henry Francis du Pont was such a consummate artist, and the canvas was his beloved garden at Winterthur, du Pont's home from his birth in 1880 until his death in 1969. The sumptuous masterpiece he created in Wilmington, Delaware, is now open for the public to enjoy, but for years it functioned as a private horticultural laboratory where du Pont, primarily known as a visionary collector of American decorative arts, experimented as much with the landscape as with individual plant species gathered from the far corners of the globe. In "The Winterthur Garden, author Denise Magnani, curator of landscape at Winterthur, offers an intimate portrait of both the man and his environment. Magnani's text and additional essays are breathtakingly illustrated by landscape photographer Carol Betsch's lush pictures of this impeccably preserved national treasure. This newly issued paperback edition also features a new foreword by Winterthur's current director, Leslie Greene Bowman." ; apart from presence of writing on the title page, the condition is VG/VG. Near Fine condition. Only light shelfwear. Square and tight. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a library discard. NOT a remainder. Pages are clean and unmarked. Bound in the orioginal pictorial boards. From the publisher: "'When an unimaginable fortune is discovered at the bottom of the sea, the US Navy must navigate the treacherous waters of greed, corruption and espionage to stop a worldwide catastrophe. Another explosive installment in the Hunter Killer series, Warshot is further proof that Wallace and Keith are the finest authors of modern submarine thrillers.' - Jason Kasper, USA Today bestselling author of The Enemies of My Country. The motherlode. Trillions of dollarsÂ' worth of gold. Enough to launch an ambitious nation to a position of global primacy. permanently. It lies on the floor of the Pacific Ocean in hotly contested territory, and its discovery might be the spark that finally ignites a powder keg of long-simmering political and military antagonism. China races to claim the territory and the gold, but corrupt leaders within the power-hungry nation commit increasingly brazen acts of violence; willing to risk destabilizing the region, and even a world war, for the chance at finally achieving world preeminence. Commodore Joe Glass and the US Navy move swiftly to intervene. Submarines and SEALs deploy with haste, bringing cutting-edge technology, naval assets, and highly advanced fighting units into an increasingly tense standoff. Their mission: to prevent a global war and to protect the sovereignty and safety of those caught in the middle of the historic power-grab. But the enormous treasure lies in some of the deepest waters on the planet. Laying claim is only the first step. The gold must be retrieved. And when disaster strikes, adversaries and enemies must come together for one of the most spectacular and dramatic deep-sea rescues ever attempted. Former US Navy submarine commander George Wallace and award winning author Don Keith are the authors of the novel HUNTER KILLER, now a major motion picture starring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman. Warshot is the sixth book in the Hunter Killer Series.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine condition/No dust jacket, as issued. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo.
