Glas ist vieles, viskos und kristallin, fragil und widerständig, kalt und hart, erscheint leicht und kann doch schwer wie Stein werden. Zugleich lädt das Material zu metaphorischen und geistig-spirituellen Aufladungen ein. Nicht so bei Petra Frey, sie ist von der Darstellung zersplitterter Teile zu Brechungen, Einzelansichten und Gesamtdarstellungen gekommen. Sie bevorzugt dabei ein freies Spiel von Spiegelungen und Reflexionen, die sich im Raum auflösen. Dabei treten ihre Darstellungen aus einem zumeist dunklen Hintergrund hervor, der ihr das Spiel von Spiegelungen und Durchsichtigkeit, bis hin zu ungewöhnlichen Lichtphänomenen erlaubt. Indem Petra Frey so das Licht gleichsam befreit, werden die dargestellten Glasobjekte, durch ihren Malprozess gleichsam entmaterialisiert, fast so, als erlöse sie das Glas aus seiner Gegenständlichkeit, um es in reines Licht zu verwandeln.…

Informed by conceptual art, historical painting and avant-garde film, Wall began to produce large-format color transparencies, presented on light-boxes, in the late 1970s--a format that has become strongly identified with his work. This volume includes recent examples of this work, as well as large black-and-white prints--a format first incorporated into Wall's practice in 1996. Wall divides his photographs into two categories: documentary and cinematographic.
