Añadir al carrito4to. [38 pp (unpaginated).], on thick toned pulp-paper stock. With 283 original silver gelatin photographs mounted, w/ ink MS captions below by Leerburger (1 removed), 2 of the images are 5 x 7 in. self-portrait candid shots of Leerburger w/ his camera; 41 colour linen & black & white postcards mounted, 2 TLS on NY World's Fair letterhead, mimeographed winner's list sheets, 1 large printed Award of Merit laid-in, additional World's Fair ephemera mounted within. Original souvenir post-binder album, embossed cover illustration of Trylon & Perisphere front cover, map of Fair on rear pastedown (chipping & toning to fore-edges of internal leaves due to acidic paper, minor creasing and edgewear to a couple pieces, some minor rubbing), still a VG exemplar. A well-annotated vernacular snapshot photo album shot and created by an intrepid New York fire insurance salesman during several visits to the 1939 New York World's Fair Exposition shaped around the theme of "The World of Tomorrow." Visiting along with 44 million other visitors from 1939-1940, he has included shots of those in native costume, rides of tomorrow, architectural works, as well as extended visits to the Soviet, British, French, amusement areas, the glass building, Florida Building, Missouri Building, and so many others. The Photographic Society of America's intent was to present amateur photographer's efforts from around New York, and the U.S. to present their favorite themes, and events at the Fair in 1939, and again in 1940. Of additional interest are the series of photos he has included depicting himself appearing in a television broadcast system, with signed card from RCA certifying that he had been televised in the RCA Exhibit Building. RCA had completed a lengthy lawsuit with Philo Farnsworth over camera patents, and on April 30, 1939, RCA became the fist to transmit television broadcasts from the Fair, which proved very popular to those visiting. The two TLS from Edward F. Hickey, Asst. Dir. of Special Programs at the New York World's Fair notified Leeburger first in October, 1939 that his self-portrait in the funhouse "Concave Mirror" won out over 2000 other entries, and was on exhibit at the Contemporary Arts Building at the Fair, with him only needing to notify those at the entrance to gain free entry. Leerburger has included 5 x 7 in. shots of award-winning "Concave" as well as his "Convex Mirror" self-portraits, and smaller snapshot sizes of both in a different portion of the album. Leerburger (1867-1945) was a German-American traveling salesman whose career began with clothing and fashions, but during the Great Depression moved to selling fire insurance in New York City. Brown, A Big Year for Camera; the 1940 Season Brought Gains in All Phases of Photography, New York Times, Dec. 29, 1940, Section XX, p. 7; Iain Logie Baird, "Television in the World of Tomorrow," Echoes Magazine (Winter, 1997).

[59 leaves (unnumbered).], archival mylar sleeves with 105 original silver gelatin photographs on a variety of matte finish & glossy photo paper stock, 37 are approx. 8 x 10 in. photos, w/ several still preserving remnants of old drymount paper, 1 still mounted on studio board from having been exhibit displays at the Photographic Society of America Booth, 18 with contestant information, or photographer's information; 28 4 x 5 in. to 5 x 7 in., with 21 retaining their entry contestant information, and the remainder sized from 2 x 2 in. up to 4 x 6 in. snapshots, some w/ scalloped edges, and all w/ contestant information either typed or in manuscript (a few contestants submitted more than one), and most retaining bright strong contrast. All preserved in a recent blue cloth 3-ring binder, a VG collection. The 1939 New York World's Fair Exposition was shaped around the theme of "The World of Tomorrow," featured the iconic Trylon & Perisphere, and witnessed over 44 million visitors from 1939-1940, many of them traveling by automobile. Art Deco, and sleek Streamline Moderne lines were the overriding design concept for the Fair, as reflected in these submitted shots for such pavilions as "Italia," "the "Du Pont Building," "Chrysler Motors," Borden's "Dairy World of Tomorrow," the futuristic "Petroleum" building, day & night shots of the "Swft" meats building, along with the entrance to the striking Heinz 57 pavilion. The statues depicted in these submitted and a few prize-winning display images, include James Earle Fraser's "George Washington," Sidney Waugh's "Manhattan" sculpture and the Hall of Marine Transportation mounted on studio board; Carl Milles's "The Astronomer" which stood near the foot of the Helicline in the Theme Center; Paul Manship's the "Time & Fates of Man," and the imposing statue of George Washington celebrating the 150th anniversary of his first inauguration as President in New York. The monumental Trylon and Perisphere appearing frequently as the central theme in a significant number of the photos were designed by Wallace Harrison and Andre Fouilhoux, serving as the center of the Fair, with the two connected by a 610-foot long escalator, and an interior diorama by Henry Dreyfuss called Democracity, depicting a utopian city of the future, and a 950-foot-long Helicline spiral ramp. The Photographic Society of America's intent was to present amateur photographer's efforts from around New York, and the U.S. to present their favorite themes, and events at the Fair in 1940. Included along with a photo of the "Snapshotter's Contest" trophy, are images of a Siamese cat from the Sept. 28, 1940 cat show by Mildred Wallrich; the Ford Building and the 28,000,000 millionth Ford vehicle which rolled off the assembly line in April, 1940, and was displayed with requisite license plates at the Fair by Walter A. Wirth; sculpture detail from Time & Fate of man by Louis Pelletier, with specifics on exposure, camera used, and more; "Brobdignagian and the Lilliputians" capturing massive statue next to the Perisphere, and crowd lined up in miniature in the background waiting to enter the attraction. Also captured in the snapshots are parades, fountains, elephant and rider; tightrope walkers, and much more. No similar exhibits preserved in Worldcat; See: Robert W. Brown, A Big Year for Camera; the 1940 Season Brought Gains in All Phases of Photography, New York Times, Dec. 29, 1940, Section XX, p. 7.
