Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. An uncommonly pretty little pocketbook-sized exemplar, 4 3/4" x 3" tall and wide, respectively, of a now rare book, being a collection of musings by the 18th and early 19th century lawyer on poetry, literature, criticism, and anatomy and physiology, especially physiognomy. Cracking to second endpaper, else clean and unmarked and bright of interior. All edges gilt. Poems and essays by George Alexander Stevens, then his celebrated "Lecture on Heads," edited and then "improved by Mr. Frederick Pilon," and newly adapted "to the present time." Lovely engraved frontis in black-and-white of a domestic scene, a woman seated at a table facing the fireplace, a man (her husband?) standing behind her, another woman peeking from behind the curtain; the engraving depicts a scene laid out in full on p. 29 involving a newlywed perceiving herself as having been wronged somehow but unable or unwilling to communicate so beyond "Nothing" issued wanly and lifelessly. Quite funny. Gilt-stamped designs to front and rear covers, gilt-ruled and illustrated spine, and fleurs-de-lis at all eight tips. George Alexander Stevens (1710-1780) was something of a Renaissance man, an actor, a lawyer, a playwright, a poet and a songster. This main essay is a humorous parody of then current obsessions with head sizes and shapes and popular fashion in England at the time. xxi 250 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
