Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book provides an insightful overview of the Hawaiian islands and its native people, the Kanakas. The author delves into the archipelago's discovery, the arrival of Captain Cook and its tragic consequences, and the gradual decrease in the indigenous population due to disease and strife. The book also touches upon the reign of Kamehameha the Great during which the islands were unified under a single ruler and the subsequent abolition of the ancient religion. The author discusses the positive aspects of the Kanaka culture, highlighting their close relationship with the sea, their expertise as farmers and cattle-raisers, and their remarkable musical and artistic talents. However, the book also explores the challenges now faced by the Hawaiian people including the loss of their language, the impact of foreign influence, and the influx of immigrants. The author skillfully places the Kanaka experience within the broader context of Pacific Island history, providing unique insights into the forces that have shaped this fascinating culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
