This book was previously owned by the renowned sociologist, Daniel Bell. However he did not write his name in the book. You can see the covers in the photos. They are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. There's a little bit of crinkling at the spine ends. The cover edges are in solid shape, no rubbing. The cover corners have only a tiny bit of superficial rubbing, no rub-through. The page edges look perfectly clean. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover. The covers are nicely tight. The interior of the book is in very good condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. I found only one small spot, not near the print. I didn't see any creasing, no placeholder creases, no turned-down corner creases. There is a little crinkling off the bottom edge of the two sides of one page, not near the print. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. All of the illustrations are in excellent condition. As referenced, the book came from the estate of Daniel Bell. I put a protective cover on the jacket soon after purchasing the book. The jacket is in quite solid condition. There's a little wear at both spine ends. The flaps are in very good shape, clean, no tears, a teeny tiny crease at the tip of the front flap's top corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. The chapter headings are as follows: The Emperors of Byzantium; Transition from Antiquity and the Emergence of Byzantium; Establishment of a Homogenous Byzantine Society; Decline; Prostration and Collapse. The book concludes with an Epilogue, Bibliography, List of Illustrations, Maps, and Index.
