A compact continuation of Lewis' landmark anthropological study The Children of Sánchez (1961), revisiting the Mexico City family thirteen years after he began studying Jesus Sanchez and his children. Here Lewis concentrates upon a single event - the death of their maternal aunt Guadalupe - and constructs the account primarily from interviews with Manuel, Roberto, and Consuelo Sanchez. The narrative proceeds through three sections, The Death, The Wake, and The Burial, allowing the siblings to relate the same experience through their individual perspectives. First Edition, First Printing, unequivocally established by the copyright page, which states 'First Printing' above the complete number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. The dust jacket retains the original price on the front flap and the rear flap carries the printer's date code '10/69.' The book itself is Very Good+ to Near Fine: binding square and firm, lettering strong, with scattered light spotting/foxing and minor soil to the cream cloth, particularly noticeable on the boards and near the upper spine. The brown topstain remains strong. Interior is exceptionally clean and unmarked with only normal age toning. Dust jacket Very Good: complete and unclipped, with overall age toning, light surface soil and rubbing, several small edge tears and creases, and a more conspicuous chip/tear at the upper spine/front-joint area. The jacket nevertheless presents very well and retains its strong black, yellow, and red typography. There are two particularly good bibliographic details here. First, A Death in the Sánchez Family appeared in 1969, only about a year before Lewis' death in December 1970, making it one of the final books published during his lifetime. Lewis had maintained contact with the Sanchez family after The Children of Sanchez, rather than simply returning to old field notes; his introduction explains that he had continued visiting them and that this volume arose from that ongoing relationship. A version of the work also appeared in the September 11, 1969 issue of The New York Review of Books, making this an interesting example of anthropological fieldwork reaching both academic and general literary audiences. The second detail is the design. The copyright page credits Vincent Torre with the book's interior design, while the jacket specifically credits Muriel Nasser. Nasser was an active and distinctive book-jacket designer of the period; documented examples include Robert Penn Warren's Who Speaks for the Negro? (1965) and Cormac McCarthy's The Orchard Keeper (1965), Outer Dark (1968), and later Child of God (1973). The bold hand-drawn-looking typography on this jacket is a collectible design feature in its own right, not merely generic Random House decoration. Oscar Lewis (1914-1970) was an American anthropologist particularly influential for his detailed studies of impoverished families and for developing the controversial concept of the "culture of poverty." He earned his Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University in 1940 and joined the University of Illinois in 1948, where he helped establish its anthropology program. His fieldwork ranged from Mexico and Puerto Rico to India, Cuba, and the United States. Lewis became widely known beyond academic anthropology through books such as Five Families (1959), The Children of Sanchez (1961), Pedro Martínez (1964), and La Vida (1966). His method made extensive use of recorded first-person testimony, allowing the people he studied to speak at unusual length in their own voices. La Vida received the 1967 National Book Award, while Lewis' "culture of poverty" thesis became both highly influential and intensely debated within anthropology and public policy.
