David Vestenskov became a chief consultant at the Royal Danish Defense College. This is the Proceedings of a conference commemorating the tenth anniversary of the addition of the… Baltic State to the NATO alliance. All contributions to this publications illuminate that this conference could not have been timelier than was the case. Thought the content was dictated by contemporary events, opinions shared, as well as the policies stated, furthered the discussion of how NATO should react in a crisis situation, and what priorities the Alliance must have in order to maintain and develop its deterrent force. This was far more ambitious than expected at the initial planning stage of the conference. It documents how the crisis in Ukraine was perceived at almost the highest political level possible, as well as by leading international experts in the field. In conclusion, this resulted in a conference initiating a debate on how European security can continue to be maintained within a NATO framework. One of the immediate effects was further defence cooperation between Denmark and Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, whereas the most important lesson was that maintaining security through an alliance cannot be doe with constant reductions in the members' national defence budgets. Security has a price , and as the member countries have made cuts on their defence expense, they have also made cuts in their security.
