Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores and categorizes the structures of the Organs of Hearing, focusing on the Ears of humans. It begins with an overview of the anatomy of the external ear, including its folds and cartilages, muscles and vessels, with additional attention to the differences between an adult ear and that of a child. It then proceeds to describe the bony passage of the ear, the auditory passage, and the membrana tympani that separates the external ear from the middle ear. Particular attention is given to the malleus, incus, and stapes, which are three small bones that play a crucial role in hearing. The author describes how the malleus is connected to the membrana tympani, the incus to the malleus, and the stapes to the incus. Each of these connections and their importance to hearing is meticulously detailed, and the author also provides information on the various muscles and nerves that are part of the auditory system. Concluding the book is a discussion of sound waves, with particular attention given to their role in how we perceive sound. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Añadir al carritoParis: E. Michallet, 1683, kl.-8°, (24), 210, (6 blanc) pp., 16 folded plates, fine contemporary calfskin binding with gilt spine; a very fine copy. FIRST EDITION of the first scientific monograph on the ear and its diseases. It is also regarded as the first otological treatise in a vernacular language, French rather than Latin. It was Du Verney's only book. The work covers the structure, function and diseases of all parts of the ear, and its engraved plates are admired for their clarity. The engravings are traditionally attributed to Sébastien Le Clerc. Du Verney described the ceruminous glands of the external auditory canal and followed the facial nerve and the chorda tympani further than his predecessors. He showed that the bony external meatus develops from the tympanic ring, and he explained bone conduction. He also described the Eustachian tube as the channel through which the air in the tympanum is renewed, and he introduced the term "bony labyrinth" for the whole inner ear. With the physicist Edme Mariotte he proposed the first "resonance theory" of hearing. In it the bony spiral lamina of the cochlea acts as a graded resonator. The wider parts respond to low tones and the narrower parts to high tones, and the nerves carry these impressions to the brain. The theory is regarded as a forerunner of Helmholtz's resonance theory of 1863, although Du Verney assigned the frequencies to the cochlea in the reverse order of the modern understanding. Du Verney also identified a temporal bone tumor, which is believed to be the earliest description of cholesteatoma. Guichard Joseph Duverney (1648 - 1730)was born in Feurs and took his medical degree at Avignon. He became professor of anatomy at the Jardin du Roi in 1676 and anatomist of the Académie Royale des Sciences. His pupils included Winslow, Sénac, Petit, Dionis and Valsalva. Añadir al carritoFirst English ediiton of the first thoroughly scientific study of the structure, function and diseases of the ear. Duverney was the first to depict the arteries, veins and nerve branches of the auricle, the first to demonstrate that the bony part of the external auditory meatus originates from the annulus tympanicum, and the first to describe and illustrate the communication between the tympanic cavity and the cells of the mastoid process. He corrected a long-standing error by stating that the Eustachian tube was not an organ of breathing or hearing but simply the channel through which the air of the tympanum was renewed. His excellent account of the bony labyrinth included the first accurate description of the five vestibular openings of the semicircular canals, and a new description of the auditory nerve. Duverney believed the organs of sound perception to be the cochlea, semicircular canals and spiral lamina, and was the first to suggest the resonance theory of hearing that was later developed by Helmholtz. He also pointed out that persons afflicted with certain types of deafness can hear sound through bone conduction and gave what is believed to be the first description of a cholesteatoma (mastoid / middle ear tumor).…

Friderico Cassebohm . Halæ Magdeburgicæ Sumtibus Orphanotrophei, 1735. Guichard Joseph Duverney (1648-1730) "writings stand out because of their compactness, their wealth of content, their exemplary accuracy, and their precision of judgement. Investigation of the organ of hearing was one of his favourite fields of research. On his scientific journeys he thoroughly researched the hearing organ of fish. He summarized all his otological knowledge in the 'Traité de l'organe de l'ouie' (Treatise on the Organ of Hearing) published in 1683. He wanted to publish a new enlarged edition, in particular adding new "curious observations" presented at the Royal Academy of Sciences in 1705." "Unfortunately, he was not able to finish this work. A second edition was published a few months after his death, but without any new details, and corresponding exactly to the 1683 edition. Reprinted many times and translated in particular into Latin, German and English, this treatise surpassed all expectations and became the reference for studying otology for many decades. "It is in publishing the work on the structure of the ear that Mr Duvemey laid down the foundations of the high reputation which he has enjoyed and always will enjoy amongst anatomists; very different from those who are wont to find glory in proposing new explanations on parts which they do not know, Mr Duverney made it a rule to study the internal structure of organs and to describe them with the greatest precision before dealing with their uses and indicating their diseases. One must know the healthy state in order to make fruitful study of the diseased state. Guided by the spirit of method and illuminated by the most brilliant and solid genius Duverney collected into a small volume the most interesting truths." Duverney's treatise was a comparatively short work, but full of relevant data divided into three parts: anatomy, physiology, pathology and therapy."
