Soft cover. Condición: New. Masterpieces at the Jaipur Court is the sixth in a new series of books initiated by the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, City Palace, Jaipur. Written by leading specialists, they are designed to be accessible and attractive for a new generation of readers and researchers. Each of the other volumes covers one aspect of the collections. But the need was felt for something handier, which would showcase the highlights of the collection as a whole. This selection features some of the most exquisite images, artefacts, paintings, monuments and historical treasures of the Jaipur Court. Over the years, it has been an honour for the Museum Trust to welcome a variety of visiting scholars from India and abroad. The editors are pleased and grateful that some three dozen visiting scholars readily contributed two-thirds of the entries in this volume, making this a celebration of collaboration, in addition to a tribute to the Museum's collections. The contributors were asked to pick their favourite object from among those they had worked on recently, so that readers perceive a diversity of voices and views. Apart from this, current and recent members of the curatorial team have contributed entries, to complete the selection of the Museum's finest objects across all categories and all historical periods.…

Hardcover. Condición: New. As a catastrophe that uprooted millions, the partition of India has a compelling hold on South Asia and its historians. More specifically, Punjab has, as the partition's western heartland, shaped modern India's perception of itself in fundamental ways. Focusing on this region, Venkateswaran argues that collecting "tangible history" relics, documents, and paintings for museums was a crucible in which citizenship, national identity, and belonging were articulated, forged, contested, and denied in the aftermath of partition. She draws on hitherto unknown or little used archival material and connects disciplines that have seldom been linked: partition studies, South Asian museum historiography, and art history. By doing so, she offers fresh perspectives and insights into the processes that underpinned the making of India. In a period when national identities were nebulous, historic objects engendered "belonging" in all those who claimed and contested ownership over them, and those who interpreted them to reconstruct the region's past. Such people included politicians, bureaucrats, art specialists, archaeologists, historians, museum keepers, university vice chancellors, and the ordinary public. Political actors have loomed large in South Asian history, obscuring the full range and diversity of individuals who shaped it. By foregrounding transnational networks of specialists such as archivists and art historians, this book provides depth and sophistication to reorient narratives of partition and South Asian independence.…

Hardcover. Condición: New. 1st Edition. From its very inception in 1727, Jaipur has drawn upon the arts to carve a niche for itself. This book tells the story of the visual arts in Jaipur over a period of more than two centuries, highlighting the dual roles of its rulers as patrons who commissioned works from their own court artists, and as collectors who acquired works from elsewhere. In the special case of Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II, it also encompasses the creation of art, as he was an accomplished amateur photographer. The story begins with paintings from the 18th century, from the period of the founder Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, up to that of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, under whose reign painting in particular flourished. It then captures the excitement of the late 19th century when the camera competed with but also complemented the artist's brush under Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II. The story concludes with images from the eventful years leading to Indian Independence and its aftermath overseen by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II and Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, bringing us up to the mid-20th century. This volume is the fourth in a new series of publications illustrating the collections of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, City Palace, Jaipur. It accompanies a new gallery dedicated to painting and photography that opened in 2015, showcasing a selection of two hundred paintings and photographs. Specially commissioned chapters on painting and photography in Jaipur expand on the scope of the exhibition and draw together the latest research on the collection. Other books in the series are: Festivals at the Jaipur Court, by Vibhuti Sachdev; Arms & Armour at the Jaipur Court, by Robert Elgood; and Textiles & Garments at the Jaipur Court, by Rahul Jain.(jacket).…
