Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Who better to guide us through the chaotic world of the last 25 years than one who had a ringside seat for much that went on, and who writes about it with such insight and skill? This is a must read book. - Sir Anthony Seldon, author of Truss at 10'In my time working on Europe, Joao Vale de Almeida was the most important name in my address book: a view I suspect was widely shared. Lord Kim Darroch, former British ambassador to the United States'This is a superb book: provocative, witty, erudite, sober - and sometimes sobering - but ultimately wise in its prescriptions. - Sir Ivan Rogers, former UK Permanent Representative to the EU'This book is a rare opportunity to look behind the diplomatic curtain and see events and the people who inspired them up close and personal.' - Baroness Catherine Ashton, former High Representative of the EU for Foreign AffairsToday we are witnessing one of the most dangerous geopolitical situations of modern times, heralded by loud populist and nationalist voices, and steeped in uncertainty. But how did the nations of the world come to find themselves in such a predicament? Is the international liberal order condemned?Drawing from decades of experience in Brussels, Washington, New York and London, one of the worlds foremost diplomats lifts the veil on modern foreign affairs and enables us to trace how countries have been sleepwalking towards the Divorce of Nations, and the steps we can take to fix it.Having met the most consequential global leaders since the turn of the millennium, Ambassador Vale de Almeidas insightful account features personal observances of figures such as Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Tony Blair, Boris Johnson, Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy, Emmanuel Macron, Hu Jintao and Donald Trump. He also recalls the numerous times he met Vladimir Putin and the early warning signs and grievances the Russian leader aired in the run up to his incursions into Georgia and Crimea, which ultimately were the precursors to the full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in 2022.Other key moments in his compelling narrative relate to the global response to the Great Financial Crisis, how the world shifted in the aftermath of 9/11, the opening up of China and how the world reacted to the Covid pandemic. The book also includes a personal and colourful account of the first 1,000 days of Brexit the ultimate act of separation so far.Based on contemporary notes and further reflections, The Divorce of Nations is a necessary and important book that enables us to move forward with better awareness and understanding of the current volatile and fragmented scene, at both national and global levels. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: New. Although the post-colonial situation has attracted considerable interest over recent years, one important colonial power - Portugal - has not been given any attention. This book is the first to explore notions of ethnicity, "race", culture, and nation in the context of the debate on colonialism and postcolonialism. The structure of the book reflects a trajectory of research, starting with a case study in Trinidad, followed by another one in Brazil, and ending with yet another one in Portugal. The three case studies, written in the ethnographic genre, are intertwined with essays of a more theoretical nature. The non-monographic, composite - or hybrid - nature of this work may be in itself an indication of the need for transnational and historically grounded research when dealing with issues of representations of identity that were constructed during colonial times and that are today reconfigured in the ideological struggles over cultural meanings.…

Paperback. Condición: New. The construction of masculinity is becoming a field of growing interest because it is opening up new and fascinating perspectives, thus adding a further dimension to Gender Studies. However, so far the analysis has focused mostly on homosexuality. By contrast, the author examines social processes and relations that constitute hegemonic masculinity, the central model that attempts to subordinate alternative masculinities, and which is the model of male domination, compulsory monogamy, heterosexuality and reproduction. It is fascinating to follow the author as he gradually unfolds this kind of masculinity in its nearly pure state. Moreover, he involves the reader in his critical reflections on the material and invites him or her to give some thought to such wider questions as whether the hegemonic male is more resistant to change in oral cultures than in urban settings, or up to which point the agents of domination are also its victims. In fact, the author concludes that the hegemonic male is an ideal model practically unattainable by any single man, which exerts over all men a strong controlling power and often forces on them ritualization of everyday behavior that leads to an impoverishment of their lives.…

Hardback. Joao Vale de Almeida, The History Press Ltd. An inside perspective to global diplomacy from one of the world's foremost diplomats. Today, we find ourselves in arguably the most dangerous geopolitical situations of modern time. Outlining key moments over the last quarter century, this vital book represents the personal testimony of one of the world's foremost diplomats. His experiences enable us to trace of how countries and indeed the world have been sleepwalking towards 'The Divorce of Nations' and the steps we can take to fix it. Joao Vale de Almeida has met every consequential leader in the world during the time since the turn of the new millennium. His insightful account features the issues and personal observances of figures such as Barack Obama, George W Bush, Boris Johnson, Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy, and Donald Trump. He also recalls the fifteen times he met Vladamir Putin and the early warning signs and grievances Putin aired in the run up to the invasion of Georgia in 2008, which was the precursor to the annexation of Ukrainian territory in 2014 and eventually the full invasion in 2022. Other key moments include the global response to the Great Financial Crisis, how the world shifted in the aftermath of 9/11 and the impact of China joining the World Trade Organisation the same year. As the first ever EU Ambassador to the UK, Joao details a vivid and unique account of the first 1,000 days of Brexit, the ultimate act of divorce so far. Neither an academic essay nor a complete set of career memoirs, The Divorce of Nations presents a personal view of global events, projecting them into the current international context, and of the main actors involved. Based on contemporary notes and further reflections, it contributes to our understanding of a highly charged and eventful period. As we progress further into the 21st century, this necessary and important book enables us to move forward with better awareness and understanding of the volatile and fragmented global scene in which we find ourselves. AUTHOR: Joao Vale de Almeida is the EU's former ambassador to the United States, UN and the UK. Paperback. Condición: New. Although the post-colonial situation has attracted considerable interest over recent years, one important colonial power - Portugal - has not been given any attention. The three case studies, written in the ethnographic genre, are intertwined with essays of a more theoretical nature.
