Deshalb werden im Folgenden zunächst die verschiedenen Beförderungsstufen für Wissenschaftler im deutschen und US-amerikanischen Hochschulsystem identifiziert, um dann die damit einhergehenden Einkommensdifferenzen zu vergleichen. Ausgangspunkt der Karriereleiter ist in beiden Ländern der Abschluss der Dissertation, also der Erwerb des Doktortitels in Deutschland bzw. des Ph.D. in den USA, die die Zugangsvoraussetzung für eine Cl-Assistentenstelle bzw. eine Stelle als Assistent Professor darstellen. Auf der nächsten Stufe konkurrieren die Wissenschaftler in Deutschland um eine Erstberufung bzw. in den USA um eine Tenure Position. Danach können sie um weitere (Folge-)Rufe konkurrieren und mit oder ohne Universitätswechsel ihr Einkommen verbessern, wobei in Deutschland durch die lange Jahre geltende Altersgrenze von 53 Jahren eine Begrenzung dieses Anreizsystems auf die erste Hälfte der Karriere gegeben ist. Darüber hinaus gibt es in Deutschland besondere Einkommensanreize im Zusammenhang mit Rufen aus dem Ausland oder in die Industrie und in den USA in Verbindung mit einer Beförderung zum Full-Professor. Die mit diesen verschiedenen Karrierestufen verbundenen Einkommenszuwächse sind übersichtsartig in Tabelle 1 für Deutschland und in Tabelle 2 für die USA zusammengestellt. Bei einer Betrachtung der Gehälter im US-amerikanischen Hochschulsystem muss zunächst danach unterschieden werden, ob es sich um eine Baccalaureate, eine Comprehensive oder eine Doctoral Granting Institution handelt. Zusätzlich gibt es deutliche Unterschiede zwischen staatlichen und privaten Hochschulen, wobei die Gehälter bei erstgenannten im Durchschnitt immer jeweils niedriger sind.
