By the end of World War 1, Ernst Udet was the ranking living German Ace, second only to his commander, the great Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron who had died in air battle. Udet was one of the few German pilots to have fought in all four years of the War, and to survive. In this highly readable autobiography he recounts the highlights of his career. It is a story of military heroism set off with scenes of forced landings, crashes into hangars, take-offs without tires, imprisonment for faulty flying judgment, and bailing out of a flaming aircraft. It is a story of personal fear and frustration coupled with compassion and courage. Condición: New. Softback, 256 pagesPublished Price £14.99 Above the mud and misery of the First World War trenches, the battle in the air between the first primitive aircraft and the intrepid aviators who flew them was played out like a medieval knightly tournament. This deadly contest is brought evocatively to light in this remarkable memoir of Ernst Udet, the German 'ace of aces', whose wartime record was second only to the legendary 'Red Baron'. Writing in a jaunty, Boy's Own style, Udet captures what many young pilots felt as they flew off each day to duel with th enemy, the elements and an unreliable technology. Udet also recalls the many scrapes he experienced while flying for a living. After the war he became a stunt pilot, light aircraft manufacturer, star of the silver screen and playboy. In 1933, he joined the Nazi Party and became involved in the early development of the Luftwaffe. The war of 1939, however, was to prove anything but chivalric for this former ace. He had risen to the post of Director- General of Equipment for the Luftwaffe, but it was a role for which he was ill-equipped and ill-suited, and he turned increasingly to alcohol. In 1941, disillusioned and depressed, he shot himself. On the wall before he died he scrawled a message for Gà ring: 'Iron man, you have betrayed me'.The new edition of this aviation classic contains an introduction by Professor Richard Overy which examines the man behind the memoirs. Book.…

Black cloth-covered boards, gilt titles on the spine. 8vo. Volume is neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. Dust wrapper just a little bumped on extreme edges. Udet, the First World War German Ace of Aces, second only the famous Red Baron, writes in a jaunty, almost Boys' Own style, of his experiences as a fighter pilot above the horrific trench warfare. After the war, he became a stunt pilot and a star of the silver screen. The second world war was a very different experience for him, He became director-general of equipment for the Luftwaffe but it was a role to which he was ill-suited and he increasingly became disillusioned with the Nazi leadership. In 1941 he shot himself, leaving a scrawled message for Goring claiming he had been betrayed. These are his memoirs, first published in 1935, when he was still enamoured with the life of a pilot and the national socialist movement that was sweeping his country. It is a classic of aviation history.…
