Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Above the mud and misery of the trenches and the endless slugging matches of the First World War another contest was played out with all the military glamour, chivalric values and deadly outcome of a mediaeval, knightly tournament. This was the battle in the air between the first primitive aircraft and the intrepid aviators who flew them. This image of air war is brought nobly to light in the memoirs of Ernst Udet, the German ace of aces, whose impressive wartime record was second only to the legendary Red Baron. Written in a jaunty, Boys Own style Udet paints a romantic picture of his experiences and captures what perhaps many young pilots must have felt as they flew off each day to duel with the enemy, the elements and an unreliable technology. Ace of the Black Cross also illustrates the way in which war and defeat left this young generation of tough, spirited, individuals rootless and restless. After the war Udet used his flying skills to give displays to crowds of gawping onlookers, a circus act that left him frustrated and resentful. In 1941, disillusioned and depressed, he shot himself. On the wall before he died he scrawled a message for Gring: Iron man, you have betrayed me. AUTHOR: Born in 1896, Ernst Udet joined the infant German Air Service in 1915. He went onto win the Iron Cross First Class and Pour le Mrite. Between the wars Udet became a stunt pilot. In 1939 he was put in charge of air force development and production, but on 17 November 1941, he killed himself. Classic and evocative account of a First World War Ace of Aces. Contains a new Introduction by aviation expert RICHARD OVERY which describes, in fascinating detail, the man behind the memoirs. Otherwise this is a square tight book with no other marks or stamps. Covers are bright and colorful. By the end of World War 1, Ernst Udet was the ranking living German Ace, second only to his commander, the great Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron who had died in air battle. Udet was one of the few German pilots to have fought in all four years of the War, and to survive. In this highly readable autobiography he recounts the highlights of his career. It is a story of military heroism set off with scenes of forced landings, crashes into hangars, take-offs without tires, imprisonment for faulty flying judgment, and bailing out of a flaming aircraft. It is a story of personal fear and frustration coupled with compassion and courage. Contents in Twelve Chapters: Introduction to New Edition, Flight Over Enemy Territory, First Combats, Death Flies Faster, Richthofen, Homecoming, The End, New Start, Four Men in Africa, America on the Wing, On the Edge of the World, and Curtain. Seven Appendices: Victory Roster of Ernst Udet, Udet's Last Combat Report, Leading German Aces 1914-18, Other Top Enemy Aces 1914-18, Leading Allied Aces 1914-18, Chronology of the First World War, and Specifications and Data of Selected Aircraft Types Flown by Udet.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Reissue, with a new introduction. xiv, 202pp, with some black and white plate illustrations. Black cloth-covered boards, gilt titles on the spine. 8vo. Volume is neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. Dust wrapper just a little bumped on extreme edges. Udet, the First World War German Ace of Aces, second only the famous Red Baron, writes in a jaunty, almost Boys' Own style, of his experiences as a fighter pilot above the horrific trench warfare. After the war, he became a stunt pilot and a star of the silver screen. The second world war was a very different experience for him, He became director-general of equipment for the Luftwaffe but it was a role to which he was ill-suited and he increasingly became disillusioned with the Nazi leadership. In 1941 he shot himself, leaving a scrawled message for Goring claiming he had been betrayed. These are his memoirs, first published in 1935, when he was still enamoured with the life of a pilot and the national socialist movement that was sweeping his country. It is a classic of aviation history.
