The 2 volumes together appear to comprise Vol III of a larger set but each has a frontispiece saying Vol II and Vol III. Vol II starts at P1 and refers to earlier events before this war (presumably… Vol I?). Both volumes together seem tell the full story of this war. There are title page for Vols I, II & III at the back of the book as well. The index at the end of Div VI refers to events found in both volumes and matches the page numbering. Div V contains 10 black and white steel engravings and a 2-page colour map - see photos Div VI contains 6 black and white engravings and 1 map and a battle plan - see photos Red cloth boards with gilt design and titles on front and spine. Some staining but no tears. Black and white engravings (with tissue guards) and maps. Some foxing mainly to margins of plates. £150 for the pair or £75 each - email me.

Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (portions of the boards are chipped and the paper is entirely worn off). No ownership marks present. Foxing present. Text is free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The Crimean War was a military conflict fought from October 1853 to February 1856 in which Russia lost to an alliance made up of France, the Ottoman Empire, the United Kingdom and Sardinia. The immediate cause of the war involved the rights of Christian minorities in the Holy Land, then a part of the Ottoman Empire. The French promoted the rights of Roman Catholics, while Russia promoted those of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Longer-term causes involved the decline of the Ottoman Empire and the unwillingness of Britain and France to allow Russia to gain territory and power at the Ottoman Empire's expense. The war stood out for its "notoriously incompetent international butchery". E-067.
